The HBO psychological thriller The Undoing saw the unlikely duo of Nicole Kidman and Hugh Grant come together to deliver a punch. The series, despite its loopholes, impressed fans with its sheer twists and the strength of its lead cast.

Kidman plays therapist Grace Fraser in uptown NYC whose life takes a sudden turn when a shocking murder rocks her social circle and her husband, a respected doctor, is accused of the crime. Actor Hugh Grant, who had only just been nominated for a Screen Actors Guild Award for his role, plays the husband Jonathan Fraser, accused of a crime he seems unlikely to have committed. Both actors are phenomenal and left audiences wowed with their performances and interpretations of their roles.

10 Kidman: Excellent Acting

Academy Award winner Nicole Kidman has proved time and again that she is an actress par excellence. The Undoing is no exception, as she takes on the role of a woman confronted with horrifying secrets about the man she loves. Kidman is spontaneous and her natural charisma oozes into her character, exuding charm and sincerity.

9 Grant: Challenging Himself

Although Kidman is amazing, the HBO mini-series is more a Hugh Grant show than anything else. The dreamy actor, who captured hearts in the early to mid-1990s with his typical boyish charm, challenges himself in this role that is almost diametrically opposite to what fans have been used to from him.

The actor steps out of his comfort zone to play a character with a narcissistic personality disorder, hiding some dark secrets, who ends up becoming quite a terrifying antagonist. With every twitch of his muscle, Grant made sure he was hailed as an actor and not just as a bygone star.

8 Kidman: Ravishing Beauty

The actress continues to be ravishing in her 50s and it is hard to take one’s eyes off her. With her mane of wild, red hair, Kidman is as intriguing and elegant as her character who, at least for some time, seems to be harboring some secrets of her own.

7 Grant: Making A Mark In His Low-Profile Role

It is obvious that Grant makes an effort to stay true to his character. He is not hogging the limelight in terms of glamor, for it is Kidman who clearly brings the oomph quotient.

But organically, Grant makes his presence felt as his character is deconstructed from being a good-humored NY doctor who treats cancer in little kids, to someone literally without conscience.

6 Kidman: Being Consistent

Nicole Kidman has, in recent years, been part of a spate of classy projects with exceptional ensembles, such as the critically acclaimed Big Little Lies. In The Undoing, Kidman sticks to the very high standards she holds herself to.

Plus, not only does her acting prowess set the bar high for everyone else involved, but it is also helped a few of them earn a Golden Globe nomination (which she, too, has been named a contender for).

5 Grant: A Breath Of Fresh Air

Hugh Grant has been back in the industry for a few years now. He even appeared with Meryl Streep in 2016’s Florence Foster Jenkins, as Streep’s long-suffering but caring husband.

It was, however, refreshing to have him in The Undoing. While Kidman has been around for a good while, Grant had almost disappeared from the popular scene for the better part of a decade, although for those who aren’t aware, he has been appearing now and then in critically acclaimed parts that go against the grain of his usual roles. His presence added a breath of fresh air to what might otherwise be considered another run of the mill dark psychological thriller, despite the outstanding performances.

4 Kidman: The Internal Conflict

Kidman beautifully portrayed the internal conflict of a woman who is struggling to come to terms with some devastating new information about her husband.

As a wife and a mother, Grace Fraser finds herself wanting to reach out, to trust her husband even when all evidence clearly points to his guilt. Yet, she has to be cautious, as she finds her perfect world unraveling all around her.

3 Grant: A Flash Of Hugh Grant

In spite of taking on such a different, dark character, Hugh Grant’s Jonathan still had flashes of the old Grant that fans adored, although it didn’t seem out of character or stereotypical.

Grant is well-known for his particular style of acting, replete with deadpan sarcasm. Jonathan Fraser in The Undoing too has his own brand of witty repartees, which allows the fans a glimpse into the man they loved, but also fits well into the beyond-all-suspicion front that this wealthy NY oncologist had built for himself.

2 Kidman: The Intense Chase

Kidman’s power-packed performance reached heights during the final few moments of the show when Jonathan had kidnapped their son Henry and was making off with him, even as the entire police force closed in on him. Grace and her father were put into a chopper that was following Jonathan’s car around the bustling city.

The vulnerability of a terrified mother whose only concern at the moment is her child’s safety, was brought to the fore effortlessly by this scintillating actress.

1 Grant: The Chilling Climax

The same goes for Hugh Grant, in the series’ tense climactic moments when everything comes to a head and Jonathan’s whole facade has come crashing down.

The look of madness in Grant’s eyes and the chilling revelation that he was capable of becoming something inhumane was particularly intense. At this time, one cannot help wondering whether he is doing all this from actual love for his son, or the need to be adored that stems from his narcissism. Grant’s remarkable acting elevated the scene and was truly impressive.
