10 Klaus: Turning Aunt Jenna Into A Vampire Before Killing Her

Katherine is initially introduced as the Big Bad of Season 2, but Klaus gradually claims that title when he arrives in Mystic Falls. The Original intends to sacrifice Caroline Forbes during the moonstone ritual. She escapes, so Klaus turns Elena’s aunt Jenna into a vampire and kills her instead.

Jenna’s death is tragic, and remains of the most heartbreaking deaths on The Vampire Diaries. Elena loses another loved one as Klaus cements his villainous status.

9 Katherine: Unleashing Hell On Mystic Falls

Katherine dies in Season 5’s “500 Years Of Solitude,” but death doesn’t stop the devious doppelganger from wreaking havoc on the town. She is last seen being dragged to Hell, but viewers discover in Season 8 that she has allied with the Devil, Arcadius, and plans to unleash hellfire on Mystic Falls.

Katherine is the final Big Bad on The Vampire Diaries, and serves as the last antagonist for the Salvatore brothers. This mirrors Katherine’s introduction in Season 2, and fittingly concludes the show’s narrative.

8 Klaus: Drowning Carol Lockwood

Klaus follows a similar path to Damon Salvatore throughout The Vampire Diaries. Both vampires are introduced as villainous characters before slowly becoming more sympathetic and undergoing a redemption arc. Klaus ruins his opportunity to redeem himself in Season 4, however, when he murders Tyler’s mother, Carol Lockwood.

Klaus acts out of revenge as Tyler helped his hybrid army break their sire bonds, motivating the Original to kill them all. Carol’s death is another tragic moment in the series that demonstrates Klaus’ antagonistic nature.

7 Katherine: Feeding Jeremy To Silas

Katherine re-establishes her role as the series Big Bad in Season 4. The Mystic Falls gang travels to Nova Scotia to locate Silas and the cure for immortality. Katherine appears and attacks Jeremy, feeding him to Silas, who promptly kills him.

The death of her younger brother causes Elena to spiral out of control. The vampire turns off her humanity for a while before becoming consumed by hatred and vengeance towards her evil doppelganger.

6 Klaus: Trying To Kill Bonnie

Bonnie becomes one of the town’s most powerful figures in Season 2 when she channels the magic of a hundred witches. Klaus, who is temporarily possessing the body of Alaric Saltzman, recognizes the threat Bonnie poses, and attempts to kill her during the school’s 60s Decade Dance.

Unbeknownst to Klaus, Bonnie fakes her death to protect herself from the Original and lure him out of hiding. She almost kills Klaus later in the season, but the hybrid is saved by his brother, Elijah.

5 Katherine: Turning Caroline Into A Vampire

Katherine appears throughout Season 1 during a series of flashbacks to the Salvatore brothers’ youth. The evil vampire arrives in Mystic Falls in Season 2 and wastes no time in targeting Elena by turning her friend Caroline into a vampire.

Caroline was staying in the hospital, after being revived with Damon’s blood, when Katherine smothered her with a pillow and triggered her transition. The doppelganger uses Caroline to spy on Stefan and Elena as she attempts to force them apart.

4 Klaus: Sacrificing Elena

Klaus targets Elena in Season 2, and sacrifices her in the moonstone ritual to break his mother’s curse. Esther, the Original witch, bound Klaus’ werewolf nature using the blood of the doppelganger. Klaus attempted to use Katherine to break his curse centuries prior, but she turned herself into a vampire, and fled before the sacrifice could be completed.

Klaus drains Elena of her blood, and finally succeeds in breaking his curse in Season 2. Luckily, Elena survives thanks to the sacrifice of her birth father, John Gilbert.

3 Katherine: Forcing Stefan And Elena To Break Up

Katherine’s vindictive jealousy gets the better of her in Season 2. The villainous vampire forces Stefan and Elena to break up, and attempts to seduce the younger Salvatore brother. He remains faithful to Elena, though Katherine delights in the opportunity to gloat about Elena and Damon’s feelings for each other.

Stefan resists Katherine’s charms, even when the two vampires are magically confined together in the tomb. She tells him that her feelings for him were genuine, unlike her relationship with Damon.

2 Klaus: Forcing Stefan To Become A Ripper

Stefan makes a noble decision in the Season 2 finale. The younger Salvatore agrees to serve Klaus in exchange for a vial of the Original’s blood, which will cure his brother Damon of a toxic werewolf bite. Klaus forces Stefan to accompany him on a bloody murder spree throughout Season 3, and later compels him to turn off his humanity.

This forces Stefan to become a Ripper again, something the vampire vehemently fought against. Klaus regards Stefan as a friend, yet strips him of his choice and autonomy.

1 Katherine: Trying To Kill Elena

Elena and Katherine come to blows in the Season 4 finale. Katherine attacks Elena in the school corridors, and the older vampire quickly gets the upper hand and almost kills her doppelganger. Elena manages to save herself in the nick of time by forcibly giving the cure to Katherine.

This has dire consequences for the villainous vampire, who struggles to adapt to life as a human. Katherine is targeted by Silas in Season 5, and eventually dies as her age rapidly accelerates. However, in true Big Bad style, Katherine returns while possessing Elena’s body, and unleashes hellfire on the town in the series finale.
