The Vampire Diaries: 5 Ways Elena Was The Most Unlucky Character (& How It Was Someone Else)

The Vampire Diaries was often centered on Elena Gilbert’s tragic life. While that was true, other characters may have been even more unlucky in life.

Elena’s life was surrounded by tragedy, and as the series continued, she only lost more and more people. While some ended up returning to the living, that didn’t take away the devastating grief she had experienced after their initial loss.

While Elena suffered countless losses, she was not the only one to experience such pain. All of Elena’s closest friends understood what it meant to become an orphan, lose loved ones, or become an entirely different species. Life could be harsh for those who lived in Mystic Falls. Elena Gilbert was certainly unlucky, but she was not the only one.

10 Elena: All Her Parental Figures Died

Before the pilot’s opening, Elena and Jeremy had already lost their parents. Elena’s decision to leave a party early and get picked up by her parents leads to their tragic deaths when their car drove off Wickery Bridge, leaving Elena the lone survivor.

Elena was not in a good place, still grieving her parents, and places plenty of energy into watching out for Jeremy. Throughout the series, Elena and Jeremy continue to lose parental figures, including John Gilbert, Aunt Jenna, Alaric, and Elena’s biological mother, Isobel.

9 Alaric: Supernatural Ruined His Life

It all began when Isobel chose to be a vampire instead of staying in their marriage. Alaric became a vampire hunter to find her but became friends with the very vampire that turned Isobel. Alaric’s next attempted relationship with Jenna ended when she became the vampire sacrifice for Klaus. Alaric’s wedding also had a tragic ending when Jo was killed.

The Gilbert Ring also had negative effects on Alaric as it brought out a dark side of him. The ring gave Alaric an alter ego that was determined to kill vampires. For a time, Alaric himself was even a vampire and he was actually dead for a while too.

8 Elena: Doppelgänger

Elena didn’t ask for so many supernatural aspects to have anything to do with her. Unfortunately, her identity as a Petrova Doppelgänger ensured that she would be deeply involved in several cases of magic. For example, Elena’s blood is required in the ritual to break Klaus’ werewolf bind.

Doppelgänger blood also plays a key role in the Traveler spells, and they even go as far as to trap Elena and Stefan for long enough to gather their blood. Just the unfortunate reality of being identical to Katherine could be problematic for Elena as vampires could confuse the two or enjoy making Elena’s life horrible just because she looked like Katherine.

7 Damon: Prison World And More

Being trapped in a prison world with Bonnie was certainly not something Damon hoped for. Then, he escaped because Bonnie sacrificed herself and was forced back into a reality where Elena removed all memories of loving him. After realizing Bonnie was still alive, Damon was determined to save her no matter what it took.

That wasn’t the start of Damon’s tortured life, though. He became a vampire at Stefan’s urging even though he didn’t want to. Then, he pined after Katherine for over a century only to find that she never loved him and only wanted Stefan. He was also told the same thing by Elena and that’s just the tip of the iceberg.

6 Elena: Becoming A Vampire

Elena had made it clear she never wanted to be a vampire. So, of course, the moment came where that is exactly what happened. After unknowingly having Damon’s blood in her system but insisting Stefan save Matt first, Elena drowns only to be revived and in transition.

Choosing to transition, Elena spends a few years as a vampire, dealing with the change and trying to create a life for herself to accept living forever.

5 Stefan: Can’t Drink Human Blood

While drinking animal blood allows Stefan to stay in control of his actions and prevents his Ripper persona from breaking through, it is a very unlucky situation for a vampire to find himself in. Human blood makes vampires stronger, but as Stefan can’t drink human blood without becoming addicted and finding he can’t stop, Stefan must survive on animal blood.

Such a lifestyle prevents Stefan from being at full strength, making him weaker than Damon and nearly every other older vampire.

4 Elena: Losing Jeremy, Bonnie, And Damon

Elena didn’t just lose her parental figures; at other points in her life, Elena lost Jeremy, Bonnie, and Damon. Katherine let Jeremy be drunk dry by Silas when they were searching for the cure. Elena was so devastated by his loss that Damon invoked the sire bond and told Elena to turn off her humanity.

Bonnie was lost twice, the first being when she died the night before Graduation and the second being when Elena lost Bonnie and Damon at once. Bonnie and Damon were taken along with The Other Side, leaving all their friends to believe they were dead.

3 Caroline: Was Constantly Harmed

Even when Caroline wasn’t involved in a fight, she was still tortured, injured, or harmed somehow. Sometimes, enemies used Caroline as leverage against others, such as Tyler or Stefan.

Other times, her neck was snapped because she knew something she shouldn’t have or was in someone else’s way. Valerie turned her skin to feel like vervain so she would hurt other vampires when touched. Caroline was tortured by her father and was devastated by her mother’s death. Caroline’s marriage to Stefan didn’t last long either, as mere hours after the ceremony, Stefan sacrificed himself.

2 Elena: Sleeping Beauty Spell

The Vampire Diaries 5 Ways Elena Was The Most Unlucky Character (& How It Was Someone Else)

This one was just cruel, but there needed to be a way to write Elena off the series that hadn’t been done before or could not be easily undone. That being said, a sleeping spell with a magical life link to Bonnie Bennett was a unique way of ensuring Elena stayed asleep for the remainder of the show.

Still, being stuck in a sleeping spell meant that Elena would not be there to enjoy life with Bonnie, Jeremy, Alaric, and Matt. “I’m Thinking Of You All The While” is a tragically sad series of goodbyes as Elena prepares to know that by the time she wakes up, some of the most important people in her life will have already lived and died.

1 Bonnie: Hardships

For as many hardships as everyone experienced, perhaps no one has undergone nearly as much pain, suffering, and difficulty as Bonnie Bennett. Proving over and over to be the group’s savior and self-sacrificial, there was no length Bonnie wouldn’t go to save and protect her loved ones. Unfortunately, that usually meant that she would lose someone or something important to her. To resurrect Jeremy, Bonnie used too much energy that resulted in her death. Bringing Bonnie back to life meant using her as the anchor to the Other Side, giving Bonnie a foot in two realms. Bonnie felt the pain of every death pass through her.

Bonnie’s life is once again put at risk after taking pills that would stop her magic. The loophole to save her life also meant that she would pick up the mantle left behind by Rayna Cruz, meaning Bonnie would become a huntress tasked with a deep and desperate desire to kill vampires, placing all her friends and boyfriend at risk. In the final season, when it looks like things may be looking positive for Bonnie and Enzo, a humanity-less Stefan kills Enzo, leaving Bonnie to lose another loved one.
