When The Vampire Diaries first came on the scene, it was clear something magical and mysterious was going on with Elena and Katherine looking exactly alike. Little did the audience know just how deep the madness went. The paranormal series introduced fans to doppelgangers, magical doubles created by the universe to keep balance.

At first, everyone thought it was just Katherine’s escape into vampirism that created Elena alone. But as the series progressed, ancient magic came back to life and told the full story. Stefan played a role, too. Here are the seven doppelgangers of The Vampire Diaries, ranked.

7 Silas

Silas originated the doppelganger bloodline that led to Stefan Salvatore. Silas pledged his love to Qetsiyah to gain immortality and became the first being of his kind. But he wasn’t a vampire, and he hated being mistaken for one. He went on to betray Qetsiyah and stole the immortality to give to his true love, Amara.

Silas returned with help from college professor Atticus Shane. He appeared to the teacher as his dead wife and convinced him to help the first immortal man return to Mystic Falls. Bonnie and Jeremy discovered Silas’s body with the Cure, but Katherine interfered and left Jeremy bleeding so that Silas could feed off him. Once back in his body, he attacked Stefan and left him for dead.

6 Amara

Amara was Qetsiyah’s handmaiden and Silas’s one true love. She took on immortality to remain with him forever, but when Qetsiyah found out, she turned Amara into the anchor to the other side. Amara was left for centuries in agonizing pain, desiccating, feeling every supernatural death that passed to the other side. But it was her blood that spawned the Petrova doppelgangers.

When Silas finally found her body and brought her back to life, Amara was not in her right mind. She was driven mad with the pain of supernatural deaths for over 2,000 years. Though she loved Silas, she couldn’t stand to continue living in that pain. She drank his blood for the Cure and welcomed death, stabbing herself.

5 Tom Avery

After Stefan became a vampire, the universe created another doppelganger to keep the balance: Tom Avery. He was a paramedic living in Atlanta, Georgia, going about a perfectly normal life. The Travelers found him using a psychic connection with Stefan. In exchange for help with an antidote to Dr. Maxfield’s virus that left Damon and Elena like rabid vampires, Caroline and Enzo went to Atlanta to kill Tom as the Travelers wanted him dead.

As the last living doppelganger, Tom’s blood could still be used for rituals should Silas choose. But a witch named Hazel kidnapped Tom and put him under a cloaking spell for protection. When they found him, Caroline tried to save him by compelling him to run away, but Enzo finished the job.

4 Tatia

Tatia was Amara’s first doppelganger and lived at the same time as the Mikaelsons where Mystic Falls would be. When she met Elijah and Niklaus, they both fell in love with her. It was the original story of two brothers loving the same Petrova woman. Before the Mikaelson brothers, she was married to an unnamed Viking warrior with whom she had a child. Upon his death, instead of throwing herself on his funeral pyre as was custom, she chose life and to find love again.

Because of her doppelganger status, their mother Esther used her blood to create the original vampires. She also used Tatia’s blood to bind Klaus’s werewolf nature. But Elijah’s vampirism got the best of him, and he killed Tatia, ripping her apart.

3 Elena Gilbert

Born in present-day Mystic Falls, Elena is the last of the Petrova doppelgangers. Her life is filled with grief and pain, as the series starts with her writing in her diary about her parents’ deaths. Like Amara before her, she finds herself drawn to Stefan, Silas’s doppelganger. Elena is a kind and compassionate human with great loyalty to her friends. She’s willing to fight for those she loves, even if it means sacrificing herself.

Elena gets jerked around by every supernatural being, but she always pushes back. Eventually, she turns into a vampire herself and grapples with her darker side. Ultimately, vampirism doesn’t suit her because she cares too much and doesn’t want to hurt anyone. That’s why the Salvatores fight to give her the Cure to become human again.

2 Stefan Salvatore

Stefan and his brother Damon Salvatore died in 1864. Like the Mikaelsons before them, they both fell in love with a Petrova doppelganger, this time known as Katherine Pierce. Stefan was the first to turn and convinced his brother to join him, but Damon resented him for it. As the years passed, their roles changed and Damon became the sadistic brother while Stefan worked to repent for his ways.

He went through a dark period as the Ripper, unable to control his bloodlust. Only his friend Lexi could teach him to become a less monstrous version of a vampire. He returned to Mystic Falls and fell in love with Elena, but their love didn’t last. It seemed the supposed destiny between doppelgangers wasn’t true.

1 Katherine Pierce

Originally known as Katerina Petrova, she was born into the Travelers witch subculture. When she bore a child out of wedlock, her father took the baby and disowned Katerina, sending her to England in exile, where she became Katherine Pierce. There she met the Mikaelson brothers and learned of their vampirism. She was attracted to them until she learned Klaus planned on using her blood to break his curse, which meant she would die.

Rather than give him the satisfaction, she tricked Rose into feeding her vampire blood and killed herself so that her doppelganger magic couldn’t be used. From so early on, Katerina proved she was a survivor willing to do whatever it took to get her way. After escaping Klaus’s wrath, she settled for a time in Mystic Falls where she turned Damon and Stefan. She was the ultimate villain.
