The Voice just crowned its Season 21 winner, and history was made. Girl Named Tom became the first band to ever win The Voice, with veteran coach Kelly Clarkson. It was Kelly’s fourth win, as she won Seasons 14, 15, and 17 with artists Brynn Cartelli, Chevel Shepherd, and Jake Hoot, respectively. Before the results were announced, Kelly promised Girl Named Tom that she would continue to help and support them after the show.

Girl Named Tom were fan favorites from the beginning of Season 21, receiving a four-chair turn in the Blind Auditions. They were also the very first contestants shown in the first episode. The band made it through every round of the competition, winning the Battles and the Knockouts, then being saved by America in all of the voting rounds. On the finale results show, host Carson Daly revealed another way in which Girl Named Tom made show history. They became the first act on The Voice to have four songs on the iTunes Top 10 chart at once.

While The Voice fans may think that Girl Named Tom have nothing to be upset about, the band shared some sad news via Instagram following their win. The trio, made up of siblings Caleb, Joshua, and Bekah Liechty, wrote that their father is in pain following a subsequent surgery. The siblings did not say what he was being treated for, and this is also the first time they’ve mentioned his unknown illness. The post, which appears to have been written before the results show (i.e. “No matter the result on Tuesday night”) addresses the irony of their situation: “Some may think that this is the worst timing – our father taking such a downward spiral at the exact moment of our success on national TV. In truth, we feel fortunate and blessed by this joyful distraction.”

Girl Named Tom assured The Voice fans that their father’s illness won’t stop them from performing, but implied that they’ll be taking a short break. “Of course, this is NOT a goodbye. We have dozens of new songs that we cannot wait to share with you. We love you, we are grateful to you, and we hope you have a special holiday season. See you in 2022!” Fans and even fellow Voice contestants were quick to leave comments of praise as well as thoughts and prayers. Sasha of Season 21’s Jim and Sasha Allen, @speaknowsasha, wrote the following: “i knew you could do it my friends thinking of you guys and your family, so glad you get to take this victory and go spend the holidays with them.” Season 19 winner Carter Rubin, @carterjrubin, said: “CONGRATS !!!!!!! sending love and prayers to your dad and whole family.”

First and foremost, fans are hoping that Girl Named Tom’s father will be able to recover quickly. What’s interesting is that his illness wasn’t mentioned on the show. In past seasons, of many singing competitions, contestants would often talk about sick relatives in video packages, or even dedicate their performance to that relative. This created memorable TV moments and garnered sympathy which may have given them some extra votes. Perhaps Girl Named Tom didn’t want to turn their final Voice moments into a “sob story,” but one can only wonder if producers did encourage this at any point. Fans also don’t know how long their father had been sick. Ultimately, Girl Named Tom’s victory on The Voice is bittersweet for the Liechty family.
