The Witcher Why Geralt Needs Jaskier In Season 2

Jaskier returns in The Witcher season 2 and Geralt seemingly needs the Dandelion’s help once again. The Netflix fantasy drama’s first season won many admirers by introducing a fantastical-yet-gritty world teeming with subversive fantasy elements and dark humor while centered around the magically enhanced monster hunter Geralt (Henry Cavill). As early as season 1, episode 2, “Four Marks,” the powerful Witcher Geralt is accompanied by the effervescent bard Jaskier (Joey Batey), whose presence at Geralt’s side shifts from a hindrance to an asset before eventually becoming a friendship as season 1 progresses.

The Witcher season 2 trailer promises to up the emotional and visceral antes of the series as Geralt of Rivia, princess Ciri (Freya Allan), and Yennefer of Vengerberg’s (Anya Chalotra) fates continue to intertwine. The final scene in The Witcher season 2 trailer sees Jaskier jailed for an unknown reason with only a pair of mice to keep him company. Geralt hurriedly arrives to free Jaskier before ominously stating, “we need your help.”

Why Geralt needs Jaskier in The Witcher season 2 likely boils down to several factors already on display in season 1. Though a comedic and at times irritating character, Jaskier is also a walking encyclopedia of knowledge on The Witcher’s world, meaning he can be considered invaluable to Geralt as the Witcher battles all manner of strange creatures. Jaskier is also shown throughout The Witcher season 1 to make Geralt a considerable amount of money through his famed songs, a commodity that Geralt is always in need of. In addition, Geralt and Jaskier’s narrative has confirmed the two as friends by the end of The Witcher season 1 despite Geralt unfairly blaming Jaskier for his plights, meaning Geralt may also simply need him for moral support against the difficult trials ahead.

While initially met with much chagrin by Geralt, Jaskier the Bard quickly proves his worth in The Witcher season 1, with his knowledge of the Sylvan culture allowing Geralt to make an impression on Filavandrel, the elven king. Despite his youthful appearance, Dandelion is in his 40s canonically, meaning he has already acquired a wealth of worldly knowledge before becoming Geralt’s companion. Therefore, it is highly likely that Geralt needs Jaskier for his insight into a problem yet to be revealed in The Witcher season 2.

The financial impact of Jaskier’s partnership with Geralt also cannot be understated, with Geralt citing several times in early episodes of The Witcher that he is in dire need of new armor (ergo money). Jaskier’s catalog of songs that he creates around Geralt’s image as a fearsome Witcher end up bringing the pair a considerable windfall of Crowns, meaning Geralt may also need Jaskier’s talents to dig him out of a financial hole once again. A less cynical take on Geralt freeing Jaskier in The Witcher season 2 may simply boil down to the fact that Geralt, albeit begrudgingly, likes having the bard by his side. Geralt has already been shown to be “more human” than the average Witcher, meaning Geralt’s continued need for Jaskier in Netflix’s The Witcher could be as simple as rekindling a friendship between the two men.
