Shiny Pokémon are a rare species that trainers put a lot of time and effort into obtaining. However, there are quite a few Pokémon whose Shiny forms aren’t worth the grind to get. There are beautiful Shinies, like Charizard’s black form or the purple-maned Zoroark, but there are also disappointing Shinies, like slightly burnt Pikachu or darker Gengar. This article will go over each generation of Pokémon’s worst Shinies.

Shiny Pokémon were introduced in Gen 2 as different color variants that had a very low chance of appearing with each encounter. The odds of a Shiny appearing in battle in older games is 1 in 8192 encounters, but the newer titles (Gens 6, 7, & 8) increased the Shiny odds to 1 in 4092 encounters. These odds, paired with the laws of probability, can make players reach thousands of encounters without a single Shiny appearance, while other players will find a Shiny within a few hundred. While non-Shiny hunters may question why players would go to such lengths to obtain a different colored digital pet, even people who do enjoy the process know some Shiny Pokémon aren’t worth the effort to get.

If it’s going to take tens of hours to get a Shiny Pokémon, players expect to be rewarded with a beautiful color variant at the end of the grind. Sadly, that isn’t the case for every Shiny Pokémon. Some are so poorly designed that it comes across as lazy or disappointing, especially when a lame Shiny form is attached to someone’s favorite Pokémon. Here are the worst Shiny Pokémon from each generation, and how they could be fixed.

Worst Shiny Pokémon Of Generation 1 – Kanto

Even though Shiny Pokémon were introduced in Gen 2, GameFreak retroactively gave every Gen 1 Pokémon a Shiny form. However, Gen 1 has some devastatingly bad Shiny forms. Persian is first on the list, as the only noticeable color that changes is the inside of its ears. This is a missed opportunity because is Persian a very boring Pokémon design to start with, but it could have been made into a much cooler Pokémon had the Shiny form been more drastic. Persian could have been given an all-black Shiny to mimic a black panther, which would have kept in line with its air of luxury.

Perhaps more disappointing are two of the three Legendary bird trio. Moltres at least has a drastic change from yellow to red, but Articuno and Zapdos’s Shinies are nearly indistinguishable from their normal forms. Taking into account the difficulty in encountering and capturing these Legendary birds, they should definitely have more impactful Shiny forms. Articuno could have been snow-white and Zapdos could have been grey to imitate thunderclouds.

Worst Shiny Pokémon Of Generation 2 – Johto

Generation 2 introduced baby Pokémon, which are pre-evolutions of some of the most iconic Gen 1 Pokémon. However, these little cuties aren’t worth breeding for their Shiny variants. Pichu, Igglybuff, Magby, and Elekid are all disappointing Shinies, as their colors are just slightly muted compared to their original forms. Their Shiny evolutions aren’t too exciting either, but the babies could have at least shared a closer color palette with their evolutions.

Natu and Xatu are pretty cool Pokémon in terms of design, but their Shiny forms suffer from the same issue as the baby Pokémon. They are just muted versions of themselves which makes them less interesting to look at. Their red details could have been turned blue to make their Shiny forms pop without taking too much away from the original designs.

Worst Shiny Pokémon Of Generation 3 – Hoenn

Generation 3 has a lot of really good Shiny forms, but one Pokémon’s Shiny form is disappointing because of how it disrupts the synergy of an obvious Pokémon duo. Plusle and Minun are a pair of Pikachu clones, and Minun’s Shiny variant is amazing. Yet, Plusle turns a darker shade of red which is less exciting than Minun’s mint green color scheme. It would have been perfect if Plusle’s Shiny was pink so the two could share a pastel color palette.

Once again, one of the Legendary Pokémon from this generation makes the list of worst Shinies. None of the Legendary Regis have explicitly interesting Shiny forms, but Regice’s near-identical blue is unacceptable. Regice’s Shiny could have been black to represent black ice or silver to imitate the cold steel.

Worst Shiny Pokémon Of Generation 4 – Sinnoh

Sinnoh takes the cake when it comes to the worst generation for Shiny Pokémon. There are a lot of unimpressive Shiny forms that would take too long to list and fix. Just to name a few, Burmy, Wormadam, Garchomp, and Drapion are very disappointing when looking at the generation’s standard Pokémon. However, they aren’t as disappointing as Bidoof and Bibarel. These two goofballs are bound to be on a player’s team because of their usefulness with HMs, and Game Freak could have at least given them a worthwhile Shiny form. Their fur could have been grey or red – anything to make their lackluster Shiny forms a little more bearable.

Yet, Sinnoh’s worst Shiny form is also one of the hardest Shiny Pokémon to obtain. Manaphy is a chore to Shiny hunt, and Screen Rant has a guide that walks players through the painful process of Shiny hunting Manaphy. After all the effort that players have to put into hunting Manaphy, they are rewarded with a slightly different color variant that could be mistaken as the original. It could have been a darker shade of blue to represent its home on the ocean floor, or a white variant to mimic that of depigmented fish found in deep oceans.

Worst Shiny Pokémon Of Generation 5 – Unova

Thankfully, Generation 5 redeems Pokémon after a generation of terrible Shinies. However, the Unova region has its own disappointing variants. The Pan/Simi line of monkey Pokémon are pretty weird designs to begin with, and their Shiny forms don’t help any. Instead of muted colors, each duo could have swapped colors with another. Pan/Simisage could have been blue, Pan/Simisear could have been green, and Pan/Simipour could have been red.

Basculin is the Gen 5 generic fish Pokémon, and its Shiny form also matches that description. There are also two different forms of Basculin which still don’t add much variety to the Pokémon, but the Shiny forms could have played off this. The stripes for the different forms could have been changed to at least make the Shiny forms a little more worth hunting.

Worst Shiny Pokémon Of Generation 6 – Kalos

It’s tough to find a bad Shiny Pokémon in the Kalos region, but there is one that feels a little disappointing once it’s been obtained. Vivillion is a unique Pokémon as it comes in 20 different variants depending on when/where it was caught.

However, its Shiny form only changes the middle section of the Pokémon and doesn’t affect its wings. Like Alcremie, it would have been cool to see GameFreak design Shiny Vivillion to have its own unique wing pattern to better signify that it’s Shiny.

Worst Shiny Pokémon Of Generation 7 – Alola

Alola is yet another region where the Shiny Pokémon have impeccable designs, but one falls short of making it a perfect Shiny region. Cosmog is the pre-evolution to Legendaries Solgaleo and Lunala. These two Legendary beasts have amazing Shiny variants, as well as their middle evolution Cosmeom. However, Shiny Cosmog is identical to its original form, making it a very lackluster Shiny Pokémon. Game Freak could have played off its evolutions’ Shiny forms and made Cosmog a crimson red which would have made this region perfect for Shiny hunters.

Worst Shiny Pokémon Of Generation 8 – Galar

Galar is one of the most controversial regions in Pokémon because of its venture into a more open world experience. However, its Shiny Pokédex felt like taking a trip back to the Sinnoh region. There are a few standout Shinies, but a lot of them feel like letdowns.

The worst Shiny variants in Sword & Shield are the DLC Legendaries, some of which players can’t even hunt yet. Regieleki, Glastrier, Clayrex, and Zarude are uninspired Shiny Pokémon that looks like bare minimum effort on their designer’s part. These Legendaries need grander variations in their color palettes, especially considering the effort it takes to obtain them.
