The Worst XFiles Episode According To David Duchovny & Gillian Anderson

Fans have many different picks for least favorite X-Files episode, but stars David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson have a shared nominee for the worst. As great a show as The X-Files is, it produced over 200 episodes, and by sheer odds, there’s going to be some clunkers among such a big bunch. Sadly, several of those clunkers were part of The X-Files’ recent revival seasons, making some fans wonder if the FBI’s least favorite department should’ve stayed closed. Still, at least the revival gave fans gems like “Mulder and Scully Meet the Were-Monster” and “The Lost Art of Forehead Sweat.”

That’s not to say The X-Files’ original run didn’t produce some stinkers of its own. For example, there’s season 7’s “First Person Shooter,” which sends Mulder and Scully into a lame virtual reality game, leading to lots of jokes that fall flat and increasingly dated references to the gaming scene of the time. Then there’s season 2’s “Fearful Symmetry,” a ridiculous story involving aliens abducting animals and a rampage by an invisible elephant.

While those are popular picks for the worst X-Files episode among fans, Duchovny and Anderson have shown no hesitation when naming their choice for the worst. It’s a season 3 episode, with a villain that’s not exactly frightening.

The Worst X-Files Episode, According To Duchovny & Anderson

When asked to name what they believe to be the worst X-Files episode, stars David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson regularly cite “Teso Dos Bichos,” which aired as episode 18 of season 3. The episode sees the disturbance of a sacred burial urn awaken an angry Native American jaguar spirit. While a killer jaguar might have been cool, the last act of “Teso Dos Bichos” revealed that the killings were being carried out by standard domestic cats, albeit evil stray ones that live in the sewer. Both Duchovny and Anderson have made fun of how decidedly non-scary these cats are as a villain, and episode director Kim Manners is said to have begged creator Chris Carter to bring the jaguar back for the ending, as he knew he wouldn’t be able to make cats threatening.

Additionally, the entire production of “Teso Dos Bichos” was full of problems, especially for Anderson, who’s allergic to cats. At one point she has to wrestle with an attacking cat – in her case a stuffed animal – and she’s referred to it as one of the lowest lows of her career. The script for the episode also kept being rewritten during shooting, leading to further frustration. Manners even had commemorative t-shirts made for the episode’s cast of crew noting that they had survived the production. Amusingly, at one point it was planned for a horde of cats to attack Mulder and Scully, but the cat “actors” refused to do it, just sitting there instead. Duchovny and Anderson can be heard bashing “Teso Dos Bichos” as recently as an appearance on Kumail Nanjiani’s X-Files podcast, recorded during the revival, with Anderson calling it “Los Lobos Tostitos” and Duchovny correcting her to “Tesos Tostados.”
