Microsoft is testing a new 4K upgrade to the Xbox Series X’s dashboard this week which will hopefully be rolled out to everyone else later this year.

Whether you think it’s handy that studios can continue to work on games and consoles after launch or a crutch that is overused, being able to update or fix something from afar is incredibly handy. It doesn’t just mean fixing something that shouldn’t have been broken at launch either. It can also be the addition of a feature that couldn’t be implemented initially.

Take an upgrade for the Xbox Series X which is being tested this week, for example. The console’s dashboard is getting a 4K upgrade. In fact, Xbox Insiders who are a part of the Alpha and Alpha Skip-Ahead rings should already have access to the update that will give them a better-looking UI. Providing their TV or monitor is 4K-ready, of course.

“This change means Home, Guide, and other areas of the UI will be displayed in a higher native resolution for increased sharpness and text readability,” the update notes read. The Series X’s UI currently runs at 1080p. There’s no mention of whether the Series S will be getting the same treatment. The less powerful console is capable of a 4K output, so there’s every chance its own dashboard will be subject to the same upgrade.

This is the second big change to Xbox’s dashboard Microsoft has introduced in the space of a week. Insiders can also test the new night mode. Not only does it dim the brightness of what is on the screen, but it also turns down the LED light on your controller and even dims the light coming from the power button. Should testing all go to plan, other Series X owners should get access to night mode and a 4K dashboard later this year.

Sony is doing some testing of its own in a similar way on PS5. As promised, PS5 owners will be able to expand the console’s internal storage very soon. A beta test for the upcoming feature is already underway and a number of SSD manufacturers have started to flaunt their PS5-ready products.
