Warning: contains spoilers for Phoenix Song: Echo #1!

This November, fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe will meet Echo in the Disney+ series Hawkeye, but there’s plenty of Echo excitement happening in the comics right now, as she has become the new host for the Phoenix Force. But while she comes to terms with her new powers and identity, Forge, of the X-Men, tries to steal her powers, claiming it is for her own good.

Echo first appeared in 1999’s Daredevil #9, created by David Mack and Joe Quesada. A deaf and Indigenous woman, Echo possesses the ability to mimic the talents and abilities of those around her—similar to the Taskmaster. Known for the handprint on her face, Echo worked as an assassin for Kingpin, but betrayed him and fell in love with Daredevil. Echo had a memorable stint on the New Avengers team, first as Ronin, and later as herself. More recently, the Phoenix Force came to Earth, calling for a tournament among Earth’s heroes to find a fitting new host, and Echo emerged as the winner. In Phoenix Song: Echo #1, on sale now in print and digital, Echo struggles with what she has become, trying to control the raging Phoenix Force within. The issue is written by Rebecca Roanhorse, with art by Luca Maresca, colors by Carlos Lopex and letters by Ariana Maher.

Echo is trying to make a difference. She tries to foil a hold-up, only for it to spiral quickly out of control, with her setting the fire to the building and jeopardizing the upstairs tenants. When she goes to save them, the tenants curse at her, rightfully blaming her for the fire; they are then rescued by firefighters, leaving Echo confused and hurt. After a tense encounter with Elektra (as Daredevil), Broo tells her a psionic signature similar to hers has appeared in the Pacific Ocean. When she goes to investigate, she meets Forge, the X-Men’s quartermaster, and machine smith. Forge tells Echo he is going to save her—from herself.

Echo rebukes him, telling her she can control the Phoenix Force. Forge then attacks Echo, imprisoning her in psionic restraints. She breaks free, in her wrath telling Forge she could kill him—but will not. As she takes off into the sky, Echo tells Forge to never contact her again; once she is gone, Forge says he will return, with bigger and better restraints, and Echo “won’t see [him] coming.”

Comic book fans know the Phoenix Force is one of the most destructive in the Marvel Universe; when it possessed a clone of Jean Grey, it destroyed an entire solar system. Forge, along with the rest of the X-Men, knows how truly powerful the Phoenix Force is and how much misery it can bring. Jean Grey congratulated Echo when she bonded with the Force, with Grey giving her advice. But Forge’s actions show not all the X-Men are happy with the new Phoenix Force host and have little faith in Echo’s abilities to control it.

Disney+’s Hawkeye will introduce Echo to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but ahead of her debut, the X-Men are trying to separate her from her newly-acquired Phoenix Force—all in the interests of saving the world.
