Warning! Spoilers for X-Men Unlimited #5-11 ahead!

The X-Men’s recently-founded nation of Krakoa has made the Earth’s mutant population more united and powerful than ever, especially with the recent terraforming of Arakko, but its forced segregation from the rest of the world has started to radicalize mutants against their human neighbors. Relations between mutants and humans have never been easy, and even though one of Krakoa’s main laws is, “Murder no [hu]man,” there are many Krakoans who now feel they are more evolved and better than humans on the mainland. There is no better example of this than the recent devolution of the once kind and caring Nature Girl into a literal murdering radical eco-terrorist in the new X-Men Unlimited.

Lin Li was first introduced in Wolverine and the X-Men #1 as a student at the Jean Grey School for Higher Learning, where it was revealed that her mutant power let her communicate with plant and animal life and have a very deep sense of connection with the planet. After becoming close friends with Trevor (Eye-Boy) while under the tutelage of Wolverine, they both transitioned to be a part of Generation X at Kitty Pryde’s Xavier Institute for Mutant Education and Outreach. Nature Girl has always come of as a kind, caring, gentle young woman who believed in the sanctity of all plant and animal life above all else.

However, starting in X-Men Unlimited #5, Nature Girl begins a rampage against humanity that has yet to cease as of issue #11. While on a beach with other young mutants, Lin comes across a sea turtle that choked to death on a plastic bag. She psychically feels its pain and sadness. This pushed Nature Girl over the edge, and with the Krakoan nation becoming more entitled and totalitarian towards humans as a whole, she decided it was her duty to end the scourge of the humans on Earth, even if it broke a cardinal Krakoan law. Lin used a Krakoan gate to travel to Las Vegas and track down the grocery store where the plastic bag came from, eventually confronting a cashier about his role in the turtle’s death before murdering him with a pair of scissors.

With Krakoa’s relationship already shaky with the rest of the world, Professor X quickly dispatched Wolverine to bring Nature Girl in to stand trial, though he proves initially unable. Lin stops by Krakoa, picking up another young mutant, Curse, to join her, declaring themselves to be the “X-Men Green.” The latest issue ends with Wolverine finally losing his patience after Nature Girl blew up a massive oil processing plant and punching Curse and Lin in the face to take them in.

Lin’s feelings over how humans treat the Earth and its plants and animals are totally valid, but her methods have turned villainous, making her into a violent environmental terrorist. Krakoa is still meant to promote peace between mutants and humans, but in separating themselves from the rest of the world the X-Men have caused many of their race to become disconnected and desensitized to violence towards humans. While Krakoa may seem like a paradise for mutants, it could possibly spell disaster for humans.
