Writer/director Paolo Sorrentino (Youth) has made quiet a name for himself over the course of his near twenty-five years in the business as a critically acclaimed filmmaker and lead talent in foreign film, with his 2013 Italian motion picture The Great Beauty standing up as perhaps his greatest and most well known work yet. Even as the vast majority of his ouevre has been previously filmed in his native land and tongue, his more recent works have sought to court the attention of English speaking audiences in America and around the world.

Coming off last year’s Oscar-nominated motion picture Youth, which starred English speaking actors and Hollywood A-listers Harvey Keitel (The Grand Budapest Hotel) and Michael Caine (Now You See Me 2), Sorrentino appears set to deliver another major motion picture production for television with The Young Pope. The new production sees Jude Law (Spy) starring as Lenny Belardo, the first American Pope in the history of the Roman Catholic Church, as intimated by the first official trailer.

In the footage featured above, joint production companies Sky Atlantic, HBO, and Canal+ collectively promise a thrilling and duplicitous dramatic thriller starring Law in the role of one enigmatic and insidious Papal candidate. When asked who he is, Lenny responds against a brief montage of religious and materialistic imagery, “I’m a contradiction. I’m God. One in three, and three in one. Like Mary, virgin and mother; like man, good and evil.” Sorrentino thus sets audiences up for what appears to be a holy narrative unlike any other, with Oscar-winning actress Diane Keaton (Finding Dory) slated for a supporting turn in the all new television production.

Check out the official plot synopsis for The Young Pope below:

“Lenny Belardo is no ordinary Pope. He is the youngest and first American Pope in history. We find him on the morning of his first day in office, preparing to enter into the power struggles inside the closed, secretive Vatican state.”

Intoning his intentions to ignite a “revolution” within the Roman Catholic Church, Lenny appears to be a highly original character for television, and with Sorrentino working behind the scenes The Young Pope might just prove to be one of the must see television events of this year. Until the show finally sees its premiere on HBO in the U.S., viewers can continue to ponder over Law’s stunning entrance as American Pope Lenny Belardo in the above bit of chilling promotional footage.

The Young Pope will premiere in the U.S. on HBO sometime in 2016.
