Christmastime, and the holiday season in general, is typically the “most wonderful time of the year.” People celebrate in a number of ways — watching classic Christmas films, reading Christmas-related books, or watching holiday-oriented episodes of hit TV series. However, while games are very often played during this time of year, there aren’t any truly great “Christmas Games.”

The Most Wonderful Time Of The Year

Christmas is still a month and a half away, but people are already getting into the holiday spirit. This isn’t a surprise, as it is part of most peoples’ annual ritual, but now is the time people start saving for Black Friday, making unhealthy pastries, going to gatherings, and consuming their favorite Christmas-themed movies, shows, and books.

Speaking of that last tradition, there are ample Christmas-based films and the like. It’s nearly a genre in and of itself. In terms of films, the classics are endless. Home Alone, It’s A Wonderful Life, Elf, and Die Hard are just a few of the classic Christmas movies watched every year by families everywhere. Then, there are books like A Christmas Carol, The Night Before Christmas, and How the Grinch Stole Christmas! that are annual reads for many people. And, of course, people have favorite Christmas TV episodes they watch every year from shows like Seinfeld, Friends, 30 Rock, Saturday Night Live, and more. But, sadly, there aren’t any classic Christmas games.

Where Are The Good Christmas Video Games?

Unfortunately, the games that are Christmas-themed aren’t exactly beloved by gamers. Dead Rising 4 was Christmas-themed through and through but was arguably the least liked of the series. Hitman had a charming Home Alone-themed mission, but it lasted, at maximum, ten minutes. Then, Christmas games like the Home Alone video game adaptation, Christmas Nights into Dreams for Sega Saturn, and a bevy of Christmas-based indie titles on PC aren’t exactly remembered fondly. Good Christmas games are just hard to come by if there are any.

Let’s Get To Making Those Christmas Classics!

Ironically, as industry leaders have begun to brand gaming as increasingly cinematic over the years, it seems like a missed opportunity for there to be no good Christmas games. Seemingly, Christmas lends itself to themes of selflessness, redemption, and thankfulness. As such, there is an inherent cinematic nature, which is why it doesn’t make much sense for there to not be any standout, narrative-driven Christmas-themed titles.

As Christmas is a holiday beloved by many people, and a time at which people play video games quite a bit, there’s no excuse for there not to be any memorable Christmas games. If the film industry can come up with movies like National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation, Miracle on 34th Street, and A Christmas Story, then the ever-innovative game industry is certainly capable of inventing its own brand of unforgettable Christmas games. Right now, there doesn’t seem to be any games of high quality based on Christmas, so the moniker of “classic” is ripe for the taking. There are many high-profile developers out there capable of designing a perfect Christmas classic, so seize the opportunity, developers.
