German board game publisher, Hans Im Glück, has released new solo game rules for their popular title Carcassonne this week. Sales for board games have increased over the past few weeks, as people the world over are looking for new and alternative ways to entertain themselves and their families. The move to provide a solo game experience opens this up to those who are on their own or looking for new challenges.
The official rules for solo play are available on the Hans Im Glück website (German) in both English and German and are a welcome addition. The three-page document outlines the set-up and rules for placing tiles and meeples with only the base game required to play. There are a few modifications to how the game plays, but nothing too complex. There are suggestions on how to adjust the game difficulty and players are encouraged to share their high scores on social media.
How the game would be affected if one or more of the many expansion packs are used is unclear, as the solo rules make no mention of this other than a single sentence at the end, “Adding special meeples and tiles is also possible, however, we haven’t tried it yet, so you’d have to try that at your own risk!”.
There is also no mention of how these rules would apply to the stand-alone variants of the game including the 2015 release Carcassonne: Star Wars. This one is notable for featuring co-op play, allowing players to team up and face off in a 2v2 battle. Other variants have their foundation laid within a historical setting, such as Carcassonne: Gold Rush and there has also been an edition for younger players, My First Carcassonne.
Carcassonne is often seen as a gateway game into the wider world of board games and these rules will only further its reach. It will be interesting to see if publishers of other games will follow suit. Are we about to see the birthing of a new age of solo games and will we see future reprints of the Carcassonne franchise that will include a solo-play section?
