Following the recent Pokemon Direct, Nintendo adds a few new legendaries to the overall roster, leaving some fans wondering how many there are.

After Nintendo’s most recent direct, three new legendary Pokemon are being added into Pokemon Sword and Shield in future DLC. With these new additions, some fans are wondering what the total count of legendary and mythical Pokemon is. The short answer is 75, but the slightly longer version is that there are 54 legendary Pokemon and 21 mythical Pokemon, which are similar to legendaries with the exception that can be obtained through normal means.

For those unaware, Pokemon Sword and Shield will be receiving two expansions this year, the Isle of Armor and The Crown Tundra. Along with these expansions, three new legendary Pokemon have been announced: Shibfu, Urshifu, and Calyrex. Shibfu is part of an evolutionary chain and will be available in The Isle of Armor, while Calyrex will be the main focus of the new Pokemon story involved in The Crown Tundra.

Kanto

Kanto has some of the most recognizable legendary Pokemon out of any region, but this may simply be because it came first. Starting off the tradition of legendary Pokemon coming in trios, the legendary birds, Articuno, Moltres, and Zapdos, are Kanto’s premiere legendary Pokemon. In addition to them, Mewtwo is a man made Pokemon, created from the DNA of Mew, a mythical Pokemon. Mew is the first mythical Pokemon and starts a trend, where most mythical Pokemon share a few common traits: they are small in size, usually have the psychic type, and are extremely powerful. Being created from Mew’s DNA, Mewtwo shares many of his physical traits and powers

Johto

Lugia and Ho-Oh are the flagship legendary Pokemon of the Johto region. Ho-Oh plays a major role in the story of Pokemon Gold and Silver, while Lugia’s spotlight is mostly found in Pokemon: The Movie 2000, where he is linked closely with Kanto’s legendary birds. Johto also has a trio of elementally charged Pokemon, the legendary beasts, consisting of Entei, Raikou, and Suicune. Finally, the Johto region has its own mythical Pokemon, Celebi. Celebi is similar in size and form to Mew, shares the psychic type, and is even capable of traveling through time.

Hoenn

The Hoenn region has quite a few legendary Pokemon to its name, with Groudon and Kyogre at the forefront. These legendary Pokemon were responsible for the creation of all land and water in the Pokemon world. Beyond them, there are also the three legendary titans, Regirock, Regice, and Registeel, and their creator, Regigigas. Latios and Latias were also introduced in the Hoenn region and are tasked with protecting the anime exclusive city, Alto Mare. Breaking the mold a bit, the Hoenn region actually has two mythical Pokemon. Jirachi fits the bill rather well, only waking for seven days every 1000 years and having the power to grant wishes. Deoxys, on the other hand, is a bizarre Pokemon believed to come from space capable of freely changing into numerous forms.

Sinnoh

The Sinnoh regions legendary Pokemon are particular noteworthy for their cosmic place in the lore of the Pokemon mythos. Dialga, Palkia, and Giratina all play a major role in the creation myth of Pokemon, creating and maintaining time, space, and anti-matter respectively. All three were created by one of Sinnoh’s mythical Pokemon, Arceus. Arceus is essentially the progenitor of the entire universe, and in addition to creating this trio of dragons, created Mesprit, Uxie, and Azelf (three more legendaries) to keep the dragons in line.

Finally, the Sinnoh region has two more legendary Pokemon, Heatran and Cresselia, and four more mythical Pokemon, Manaphy, Phione, Darkrai, and Shaymin. Manaphy conforms to the mythical Pokemon archetype the best, but is water type rather than psychic type. Phione is only obtainable by breeding a Manaphy or another Phione with a ditto, making this Pokemon rather unique as well. Darkrai is a harbinger of nightmares, though not explicitly evil, and Shaymin promotes fertility in farming. Cresselia is sometimes presented as the opposite of Darkrai, being associated with good dreams, and Heatran is said to have been created when Dialga and Palkia created the world.

Unova

The Unova region features yet more legendary dragons, this time named Reshiram and Zekrom. They represent yin and yang, while the third legendary dragon, Kyurem, represents wuji, the absence of yin and yang. This region also has two other legendary trios, the swords of justice, featuring Coballion, Terrakion, and Virizion, and the forces of nature, featuring Tornadus, Thundurus, and Landorus. Four new mythical Pokemon also debuted here. Keldeo is an unofficial fourth member of the swords of justice, based on the Three Musketeers. Genesect is a fossil Pokemon, who like Mewtwo, was exploited by scientists, and Meloetta is a Pokemon who uses song and dance as its main method of battle. Finally, Victini is this region’s textbook case of a mythical Pokemon. This psychic type Pokemon is said to make any who battle with it always victorious.

Kalos

The Kalos region is home to another trio of legendary Pokemon which all balance each other out. Xerneas grants life, while Yveltal eminates destruction. Zygarde acts as the balance, representing nature in equilibrium. This region also has three mythical Pokemon, Diancie, Hoopa, and Volcanion, although they aren’t closely related with each other. Diancie is unique as the only mythical Pokemon capable of mega evolution, while Volcanion is unique for being the franchise’s only water and fire type Pokemon. Hoopa is interesting, as one of its two forms conforms to the traits of other mythical Pokemon, while its other form is completely different.

Alola

The Alola region adds a whopping sixteen legendary and mythical Pokemon, so they will be touched on briefly. The guardian deities, Tapu Koko, Tapu Lele, Tapu Bulu, Tapu Fini each guard one of Alola’s many islands. Cosmog and Cosmoem are unique because they are part of an evolutionary chain leading into this region’s flagship legendary Pokemon Solgaleo and Lunala, who control the sun and moon respectively. Necrozma is in direct opposition to these two, traveling across dimensions and stealing light from every source. In addition to these, Type: Null and Silvally are two legendary Pokemon on an evolution chain, and are yet more manufactured Pokemon.

Alola’s five mythical Pokemon are Magearna, Marshadow, Zeraora, Meltan, and Melmetal. Magearna is made entirely out of metal, but is actually a small creature known as a Soul-Heart in a suit of armor. Marshadow is shrouded in mystery, as very little is known about this Pokemon. Zeraora has control over magnetism and electricity, and can use this control to fly and fight. Some fans may recognize Meltan from its appearances in Pokemon Go, and Melmetal is its evolution.

Galar

Pokemon Sword and Shield’s Galar region actually debuted with the fewest legendary Pokemon count ever, with only two legendary Pokemon and no mythical Pokemon. Zacian and Zamazenta are two powerful Pokemon tasked with defeating a mysterious evil dragon named Eternatus. Once the upcoming expansions make it to players, three new legendary Pokemon, Shibfu, Urshifu, and Calyrex, will be made available. Little is known about these Pokemon yet, except that Urshifu is the evolution of Shibfu, and will have one of two forms depending on how the trainer trains Shibfu. Calyrex, on the other hand, is fabled to have once ruled all of the Galar region.

And with this, the total of 75 legendary and Mythical Pokemon has been reached. Each generation contributed to this count, although it is clear that some did more than others. It is nice to see expansions adding on to Sword and Shield and fixing some of the many problems fans had with the game at its release, and it will be curious to see what new legendaries come from future generations of Pokemon games. It is even possible that there are more, yet unveiled legendary Pokemon to come in this expansion, or perhaps the Galar region’s first mythical Pokemon.
