Sega and Paramount missed out on a huge opportunity to have a Sonic The Hedgehog game based on the movie which is based on a game.

The Sonic movie enjoyed a lot of success at the box office, but why was there no video game to accompany a movie about one of the most famous video game characters ever?

Sonic the Hedgehog performed a lot better at theaters than anyone was expecting. Just in time too as had it been released a month later than it was, it might well have been caught up in all this COVID-19 craziness. Instead, it broke records and the delay needed to redesign Sonic was one worth putting in place.

There was one thing missing, though. A Sonic game based on the Sonic movie. It seems obvious when said out loud, so why didn’t it happen? Perhaps there was one in the works and the developers got cold feet following the reaction to movie Sonic’s original design. If there had been a Sonic game to accompany the movie, what might it have included? And more importantly, what would it have been called?

Sonic the Hedgehog The Movie: The Game, perhaps. Or Sonic The Hedgehog: The Game Based On The Movie Based On The Game. As for what the game would have asked of its players, it could have been the chance Sega has been waiting for to hit the reset button on its non-2D modern-day Sonic games.

Recent offerings haven’t been much to write home about. It could have followed the movie’s main thread but also been more open. Players could have explored Green Hills, Montana completing side quests. All while trying to go unnoticed by the citizens of the town, including Donut Lord himself to begin with. Or, even better, the Sonic team could have played to its strengths and turned the movie into a 2D-side scroller.

It would even have been simple enough to split the game into zones. Baby Sonic on his home planet, the transfer to Earth, even a zone in San Francisco. It seems like a big opportunity missed if you ask us. Since the end of the movie would suggest there is more to come from the Sonic cinematic universe, perhaps Sega and Paramount will cash in and create a game that can be released alongside the sequel.
