There Should Be Less Crossover Characters In Smash Bros.

In all the excitement over characters like Banjo-Kazooie and Sonic being in Super Smash Bros., we’ve forgotten that it is a Nintendo game first.

For a while there, many Super Smash Bros. fans were awaiting the inevitable announcement of Devil May Cry’s Dante joining the fight in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Much to their dismay and to the outcry of many, the announced fighter was instead Byleth from Fire Emblem: The Three Houses. While yet another Fire Emblem character, Byleth is nonetheless a Nintendo character, which should take priority over non-Nintendo characters when it comes to Super Smash Bros.

At its core, Super Smash Bros. is a celebration of Nintendo and its properties. From Mario to Ice Climber and The Legend of Zelda to Earthbound, Super Smash Bros. was a series that always put Nintendo and its rich history first. People seem to have, unfortunately, forgotten that as numerous non-Nintendo characters that have been appearing in Super Smash Bros. since Super Smash Bros. Brawl with Solid Snake and Sonic the Hedgehog.

Since then, classic characters like Pac-Man, Mega Man, and Ryu from Street Fighter have joined the fight, and people became all too accustomed to it, now unironically calling for characters like Master Chief and Gordon Freeman being added to the roster.

This isn’t, at its core, a bad thing. It’s neat to see Little Mac pummel Joker from Persona 5 and vice versa. However, Smash Bros. creator Masahiro Sakurai is showing rightful restraint by not tossing in third-party characters left and right. Sure, Byleth may be among an unbalanced amount of Fire Emblem characters, which could be more balanced by more F-Zero, Xenoblade, or Earthbound characters. However, Byleth is ultimately part of a celebrated Nintendo property, and so it shall be celebrated.

At the end of the day, the outrage shouldn’t be directed at the fact that Dante, a non-Nintendo character, wasn’t added to Super Smash Bros. Instead, it should be aimed at why our favorite Nintendo characters weren’t added. The point of Super Smash Bros. is to be entertained by the likes of Donkey Kong and Mario duking it out once and for all. Third-party characters are as welcome as first-party ones, but Nintendo and its properties take priority in its own franchise.
