New joy-cons set for release later this year courtesy of Hori will make your Nintendo Switch a lot wider should you choose to buy them.

While Sony and Microsoft have been locked in a three generation-long war over who has the best console, Nintendo has been not-so-quietly going about its business. It has always known that the key to longevity is to be different. There are no better examples of that than the Wii and the Switch.

The Wii became only the fifth console ever to break the 100 million units sold mark, while the Switch is already closing in on the Xbox One when it comes to lifetime sales. That’s despite the Xbone having a four-year headstart on the Switch. Yet despite us loving the Switch, it is not unconditional love. For one, some are not fans of the console’s tiny joy-cons.

There are simple solutions to this problem, of course. The console comes with a plastic holder for your joy-cons so you can use them like a regular controller. You can also buy more user-friendly ones if you so choose. However, there is no real solution for when you’re using your Switch on the move. Until now. Polygon reports that Hori’s new joy-cons are about to change that.

As you can see, Hori’s new joy-cons effectively turn your Switch into one big controller. It also makes the console a lot wider when playing it on the move. Make sure to tuck in those elbows if you’re using it on the train. The joy-cons have a cross pad-style directional pad rather than four individual buttons like the default Switch ones do, and also turbo buttons that allow you to fire 5, 10, or even 20 times per second.

The joy-con is being released this September alongside Daemon X Machina, hence the unique looking X button. There are some negatives about the controllers, though. You can only use them while in portable mode, there’s no gyro sensor, and also no HD rumble. If none of those issues bother you, then this September you’ll be able to order yourself one. It will need to be shipped from Japan and costs 4980¥, a little more than $36.

Josh has been gaming for as long as he can remember. That love began with a mild childhood addiction to the Sega Genesis, or Mega Drive since he lives in the UK. Back then, Sonic 2 quickly became his favorite game and as you might have guessed from his picture, the franchise has remained close to his heart ever since. Nowadays, he splits his time between his PS4 and his Switch and spends far too much time playing Fortnite.
