These Pokémon NEED New Evolutions

Some Pokémon have incredible evolutions, while others either lack evolution when they should have one or have evolutions that feel more like downgrades than upgrades. Some Pokémon evolutions are beloved by fans, despite not making all that sense. Dragonite, for example, is iconic despite being an odd evolution for Dragonair, as it changes color, physical shape, and grows extra limbs.

The following Pokémon, however, have it worse than Dragonite. Despite the oddness of such an evolution, fans typically like Dragonite. The following Pokémon either lack an evolution when it really needs one or got an evolution that, frankly, is either horrendous or illogical.

Remoraid and Octillery

These Pokémon NEED New Evolutions

Most Pokémon evolutions build upon the prior Pokémon’s design in some fashion. A baby dragon (Charmander) grows up to be a big dragon (Charizard). On rare occasions, however, a Pokémon completely changes species during its evolution, as is the case for Remoraid and Octillery.

Remoraid is very clearly designed after a fish, so it would make since if, like many other fish Pokémon, it became a bigger, more powerful fish. However, its evolved form, Octillery, is actually a gigantic octopus. This would be baffling if not for the fact the Remoraid line’s names in English are pun based on aquatic life and military formation — specifically, guns and tanks, respectfully. Still, it would make more sense of Remoraid’s evolution was based on a machine gun rather than a vehicle.

Odder still, Remoraid already has a potentially perfect evolution: Mantine. When a Remoraid is in the same party as a Mantyke, that Mantyke might evolve into a Mantine, even if it doesn’t affect the Remoraid. It would be far more interesting if the Remoraid, much like many acquatic fish, merged with Mantyke to create a symbiotic relationship. Remoraid could’ve been the only Pokémon in the entire franchise to permanently fuse with another Pokémon.

Luvdisc and Alomomola

These Pokémon NEED New Evolutions

Luvdisc is a useless Pokémon. Its stats are horrendous. For awhile, capturing Luvdisc was the only way players could find Heart Scales, a particularly useful item, but as the games went on and alternative ways to find Heart Scales emerged, Luvdisc became increasingly useless.

What makes this particularly odd is that Alomomola, by all accounts, LOOKS like it should be a Luvdisc evolution. Both are heart-shaped Pokémon. However, what’s bewildering is that Alomomola is also a base Pokémon. It, like Luvdisc, doesn’t have any other evolved forms or anything it evolves from. It’s hard to believe both Pokémon, so similar in concept, are unrelated. Alomomola should have been the evolved form of Luvdisc, but with so many generations passing since its first appearance, that ship has sailed.

Lickitung and Lickilicky

These Pokémon NEED New Evolutions

Evolutions should make a Pokémon look like they’re growing or improving in some way. When a Pokémon evolves, you ought to at least understand that this new form is the evolved form, something superior to what came before. The evolved Pokémon shouldn’t be a downgrade, should it?

Lickilicky, however, feels like a clear downgrade from Lickitung. Lickilicky’s tongue shrinks, its body inflates like a balloon and it looks like its in a pained state of constipation whenever it moves. Lickilicky is what happens when you level up Lickitung when it knows Rollout, so perhaps we could see how Lickitung might evolve without that move? Perhaps offer an more tongue-centric evolution, much like how Greninja uses its tongue as a cool scarf?

More Branching Path Pokémon

One conclusion that can be made across the board is that many Pokémon could use branching path evolutions. While Eevee has the most well-known branching evolution path, multiple Pokémon have them. Vileplume and Bellossom both evolve from Gloom. Slowbro and Slowking both evolve from Slowpoke. Tyrogue can be Hitmonlee, Hitmonchan, and Hitmontop.

Several other Pokémon out there could easily work in alternative evolutions. One case is Paras. Its evolution, Parasect, is what happens when the mushrooms on its back overtake its mind, turning Paras into a zombie. What if Paras learned some move or held some item that could prevent that? Perhaps Dragonair could even someday evolve in a way that carries on the limbless, serpentine dragon motif.
