Apple finally and officially announced its new line of AirTag location trackers and accessories. There are a handful of models and price tags to choose from, with many AirTag products falling within an affordable price range. However, one particular branded AirTag is not only expensive for an AirTag, but it actually costs even more than Apple’s iPhone SE.
The AirTag was originally expected to be announced last year at the company’s ‘Hi, Speed’ event in October. However, that wasn’t to be the case with the announcement officially arriving during Apple’s ‘Spring Loaded’ event on April 20, which also saw the introduction of an M1 iMac. The AirTag can be attached to any item, like keys or a backpack. Then, when using an iPhone 11 or iPhone 12, the user can track down the item if lost through the Find My network. The AirTag employs ultra-wideband technology for even greater location accuracy, although it also uses Bluetooth for compatibility with devices that don’t have a U1 chip. Besides the tracking information made available through the Find My app, the item can also sound a noise for when lost, but nearby.
Pre-orders for AirTag start on April 23 with general availability going live on April 30. One of the options that will be available to order on April 23 is the AirTag Hermès Luggage Tag. The only problem is, it actually costs more than the iPhone SE. While Apple’s affordable iPhone starts at $399, the Hermès Luggage Tag costs $449. It offers Barenia leather, along with contrasted saddle stitching, which means the thread is lighter than the leather itself. The AirTag is also custom-etched with “Hermès Air Tag” and is compatible with a wide range of products, including the iPhone SE itself.
Other Hermès AirTags Are Available (& Slightly Cheaper)
The $449 Hermès Luggage Tag isn’t the only AirTag accessory available under the Hermès label. For example, Apple customers can also buy the Hermès Key Ring. This AirTag starts at $349 and comes in Fauve, Bleu Indigo and Orange colors. If that’s still too expensive for a single AirTag, then there is also the option of a Bag Charm. Priced at $299, the Hermès Bag Charm comes in the same range of colors as the Key Ring.
It’s not likely that the average Apple customer will be able to afford the price tags attached to these Hermès AirTags. Still, whether or not they spring for the Luggage Tag or any of the Hermès accessories, the AirTag itself is likely to be worth the purchase. Fortunately, a single AirTag only costs $29, while a four-pack comes out to just $99. Both packs come the option of a free engraving by Apple, making the AirTag a great and customized way to keep track of items at home and when traveling.
