All fans are primed to now expect every MCU movie to be packed with details referencing other movies from the Marvel universe, but they also have hidden details related to the real world – and in Thor: Ragnarok’s case, there’s one related to director Taika Waititi’s Māori heritage. Since 2008, the MCU has been bringing various characters from Marvel Comics to the big screen and giving them solo movies. The MCU tradition is for those heroes with their own movies to get three, but Thor is breaking the mold and is the first one to get four solo adventures.

The God of Thunder arrived at the MCU in 2011 with the movie simply titled Thor, which introduced the audience to him, his father Odin, and his brother Loki. Thor returned in 2013 with Thor: The Dark World, through which the MCU presented another Infinity Stone in the shape of the Aeter, but this second adventure was underwhelming and uninteresting, and Thor 2 is often considered one of the worst MCU movies. When all seemed to be lost, Marvel took Thor in a different direction in Thor: Ragnarok thanks to Taika Waititi, who seized Chris Hemsworth’s comedic skills and gave the character a personality, thus reviving interest in him.

Thor: Ragnarok reunited viewers with the title character after his absence in the Civil War conflict, and saw him confronting some old demons and the biggest threat he had encountered up to that point. Thor: Ragnarok brought his sister, Hela, into the mix after Odin’s death, and her actions led to the destruction of Asgard, forcing Thor, Loki, and the rest of the Asgardians to flee. Thor: Ragnarok also introduced Valkyrie, a legendary warrior who would go on to become the King of New Asgard in Avengers: Endgame and helped Thor and Bruce Banner escape from Sakaar, and it was through that sequence that the movie included a nod to Waititi’s heritage.

A Reddit user shared that the designs of two new spaceships introduced in Thor: Ragnarok include subtle nods to Taika Waititi’s heritage: the Commodore and the Warsong. The Commodore is the ship owned by the Grandmaster that Thor, Valkyrie, and Bruce used to escape from Sakkar, while the Warsong was the spaceship used by Valkyrie (and which was destroyed when the previously mentioned characters were chased by the Sakaaran Guards when they escaped from Sakaar). The Commodore is actually painted in the colors of the Aboriginal flag (red, yellow, and black) and the Warsong used the color of the Tino Rangatiratanga flag (often referred to as the Māori flag). Waititi’s father was Māori, and he has openly spoken about his roots, and in an interview with triple J in 2017, Waititi shared that he used the colors of the Aboriginal flag on the Commodore, saying that “the heroes of this film are escaping from this world in the Aboriginal flag”, while in a different interview with Screen Australia, he mentioned the Warsong is all about the Tino Rangatiratanga flag.

These aren’t the only nods to his roots in Thor: Ragnarok, as Waititi has said he wanted to fill the movie with jokes for New Zealand and Australian audiences, including the names of the ships: the Commodore, the Statesman (another ship owned by the Grandmaster), and the Kingswood, which are all named after Holden cars, an Australian marque owned by General Motors. Taika Waititi’s creativity expands beyond his stories and visual style, as he found really clever and fun ways to reference his heritage and home country, and there’s no reason to believe he won’t continue doing so in Thor: Love and Thunder and beyond.
