Some Tiger King fans think David Spade, not Nicolas Cage, would be a better choice to play Joe Exotic in the upcoming scripted series. Yesterday, it was announced that Nicolas Cage would play Joe Exotic in an upcoming Tiger King scripted series. The announcement was met with mixed reactions as some fans thought Cage wasn’t the right fit for the role. This sparked an online debate with some fans suggesting that Spade should play Joe Exotic.
The upcoming scripted TV show is an adaptation of Leif Reigstad’s article in Texas Monthly titled “Joe Exotic: A Dark Journey Into the World of a Man Gone Wild” based on Exotic’s life that was also portrayed in Tiger King. Coming from American Vandal showrunner Dan Lagana, Cage was announced to play the role of Exotic. Based on the physical similarities between Exotic and Cage, it seems like the actor was born to play this role. The eight-episode limited series will be shopped to networks in the coming days, it’s unclear where it will land.
Many fans didn’t seem to agree with the choice to cast Cage as Joe Exotic and took to Twitter to express their disapproval. While both actors are accomplished in their fields, these fans tend to think Spade would be a better fit for the role. They claimed Spade has played a similar character in Joe Dirt. He also has vast experience in TV roles. However, others think he would be ideal only if the show was pure comedy and prefer Cage for the role. In terms of physical similarities, Spade might share similar looks, but Exotic is a visibly tall man as opposed to Spade’s stature.
