Harry and Marv might be the main villains, but Tim Curry’s concierge is Home Alone 2: Lost In New York’s secret weapon. Home Alone is the classic tale of young Kevin McCallister (Macaulay Culkin) being accidentally left by his family during Christmas. Kevin has a ball having the house to himself, but when thieves Harry (Joe Pesci) and Marv (Daniel Stern) target his house, it’s up to him to defend it; he does so with a slew of inventive and painful traps.

Home Alone is now a staple on TV during Christmas time and a sequel was inevitable. Home Alone 2: Lost In New York found Kevin accidentally boarding the wrong flight during another planned vacation and winding up in New York on his own; incredibly, the freshly escaped Harry and Marv also encounter him there and seek revenge. While Home Alone 3 was originally supposed to focus on a teenage Kevin, Macaulay Culkin had retired when it came around, so the 1997 sequel focused on a new character played by Alex D. Linz.

Two more instalments followed in the form of badly-received TV movies, while a Home Alone reboot is currently in development. While 1992’s Home Alone 2 is essentially a bigger-budget retread of the original – right down to key plot beats – it’s still an entertaining ride and holds a lot of nostalgia for viewers of a certain generation. Outside of the inherent cartoony nature of the movie’s violence, where Harry and Marv survive a borderline Looney Tunes amount of physical punishment, it’s almost easy to overlook the fact they both really want to kill Kevin.

This gives the original movies a twinge of darkness, but one villain in Home Alone 2: Lost In New York who tends to get overlooked is Tim Curry’s concierge. When Kevin swindles his way into a room at New York’s Plaza Hotel, Curry’s Mr. Hector is immediately suspicious of the precocious boy, probably because he doesn’t fit in with hotel’s more upper-crust guests. He snoops around, trying to sneak into Kevin’s hotel, only to be outsmarted by the old dancing silhouette/tape-recorded angry voice of Uncle Frank trick.

Tim Curry is a hammy delight in Home Alone 2, despite the fact his character is actually in the right. Kevin checked into the hotel alone and paid for the room with a credit card that’s later reported stolen, but its how Mr. Hector goes about the job that makes him so smarmy. He and the staff attempt to catch Kevin on their own after discovering the credit card fraud, and are later fooled by another patented Kevin trick when he plays an old-timey gangster film to stall them. Curry’s concierge later gets a very satisfying slap from Kevin’s mother Kate for the mess he made of the situation, but he at least throws in a Plaza suite for the family as compensation. Despite being a small role in terms of screentime, Curry’s performance adds a lot to Home Alone 2: Lost In New York’s charm.
