Coronavirus warnings have become so common that even Tinder users are now swiping left on them. The popular dating app has started providing a warning to users reminding them to take care of themselves first, and have ‘fun’ later. However, the reaction on social media suggests that users have mixed feelings about the warning.

Coronavirus, now called Covid-19, has fast become a global health emergency and has already claimed more than 3,200 lives, with over 94,000 confirmed cases. The outbreak has impacted almost all parts of society including entertainment and the tech industry. For example, in the entertainment world, the release of the new James Bond movie – No Time To Die – has been postponed by seven months to avoid cancelling premiers and reducing the impact of potential theater shutdowns in multiple countries. Since the virus is understood to spread through respiratory droplets during close human contact, social gatherings are an added risk no one wants to take. Due to the all of this, it is not hard to see why a popular dating app is also worried about its users.

As Business Insider reports, Tinder users have started receiving a health advisory on how to protect themselves from coronavirus. The reminder, which only pops-up after dozens of swipes, contains tips regarding touching one’s face, using hand-sanitizers, and keeping distance from others during public gatherings – all of which are approved recommendations by the World Health Organization. The pop-up even links back to the WHO’s page on the topic. However, this has resulted in many taking to Twitter (and other social platforms) to voice their displeasure and/or amusement at the cautionary notice, while also mocking the dating app in the process.

Twitter Users React To Tinder’s Warning

Many on Twitter are comparing the in-app coronavirus warning to Tinder’s apparent inaction when it comes to shady dates, catfishing, and worse. Highlighting this, several users tweeted that coronavirus is not what they are really worried about getting infected with while using Tinder. Meanwhile, several others have taken offense at Tinder’s advice to maintain social distance and are questioning the logic of a dating app making such a request. From the other perspective, there are those who are defending Tinder’s efforts too, with some claiming that the dating app now provides better information on coronavirus than the White House itself.

Whichever side someone fall on, it is safe to say most are finding it very interesting that a dating app has put out an advisory like this. While thoughtful of Tinder, judging by the Twitter reaction, users aren’t sure if it is a good idea for the dating app to suggest safety precautions that directly impact on some of the reasons the service is used in the first place. On the other hand, coronavirus is proving highly dangerous and any step in helping to curb the outbreak is one that most people will appreciate. Tinder is understood to have a user base of over 50 million and getting an important public health warning out to all of those users is a sensible thing to do. Tinder’s move is also not the only unusual one of late with the WHO having joined TikTok to educate teens about coronavirus.
