Tinder has introduced a new Vibes smartphone feature that could improve matches between users. Matches occur on Tinder when two users mutually like each other. Users can indicate they like someone by swiping right on their profile, and both will get a notification about the match. In-app events, like Swipe Night and Swipe Surge, are live experiences where users interact with each other in real-time and Vibes is attempting to build on both.
The dating app has announced a few new features this year. Back in March, Tinder confirmed its plans to introduce background checks to the app, thanks to a partnership with Garbo. It also announced a partnership with Lyft in March, where greater integration between the two apps offers users the ability to schedule a Lyft ride for a date. Additionally, Tinder users are also able to utilize other safety features from the Lyft app, such as location sharing.
In a press release, Tinder said Vibes will provide users with an additional form of self-expression, allowing them to share opinions on things that matter to them. Vibes will officially start rolling out at the end of May and when a Vibes event starts, Tinder users will receive a notification. Following which, they will be asked a series of questions and the answers will provide them with hints on compatibility with potential matches. While each Vibes event lasts 48 hours, Vibes will be displayed on the user’s profile for 72 hours. If users match while participating in a Vibes event, they’ll see the Vibes answers in a chat window. If a Vibes event works out, users can then video chat with each other. According to Tinder, early Vibes testing has already seen an increase in likes and matches.
Will Vibes Actually Improve Matches?
Vibes could lead to people learning more about each other before they even really talk. With this in mind, the conversation could have more depth, and a conversation with more depth could eventually lead to a greater connection, possibly even resulting in a lasting relationship. It also seems like the questions themselves could act as good conversation starters, with topics ranging from pop culture, to whether or not the user likes to cook. Overall, Vibes offers a way for users to get to know each other, just by answering simple, rapid-fire questions.
More generally speaking, it’s a good time for matches on Tinder to have a greater chance of success. Online dating has become all the more common over the last year, with the coronavirus pandemic keeping people at home.
