Titanfall 3 Or Apex Legends 2 What Respawn Will Likely Do Next

Just over a decade after its formation, Respawn Entertainment has become a developer to look out for. An announcement that either Titanfall 3 or Apex Legends 2 were on the way would be met with much excitement. Respawn most recently released a VR title, Medal of Honor: Above and Beyond, and is continuously at work on Apex Legends, but has remained silent so far on its next big original IP. With the success of both Apex and Titanfall, one would think there are plans for sequels, but which one is more likely to come next?

The original Titanfall, which came out in 2014, was exclusive to Xbox and PC. The sequel followed two years later on more platforms, and a third Titanfall is only rumored for now. Apex Legends is more recent, coming out in 2019, and takes place in the same fictional universe but has very little in common in terms of gameplay. The games even share the same weapons, but the fire modes, recoil patterns, and each gun’s effectiveness varies quite a bit. As for which sequel will come first, it’s more likely that Titanfall 3 will arrive before Apex Legends gets a follow-up.

Titanfall 3 hasn’t been officially announced, and Respawn is probably prioritizing Jedi: Fallen Order 2’s release since it’s confirmed to be in development, so it’ll likely be a while before Titanfall players get to hop into a fresh mech. Apex Legends still boasts a respectable player base after two years, and Respawn won’t want to compromise that with a sequel before Apex has run its course.

What Will a New Titanfall Game Look Like?

The success of Apex Legends will probably have an effect on what Titanfall 3 becomes, however. As a live service game, Apex has been constantly receiving updates, and will supposedly have Titanfall-related content for its ninth season. Neither of the Titanfall games had the longevity that Apex is displaying, so the third Titanfall could potentially lean even further into single-player than Titanfall 2 did. The first Titanfall didn’t have a full-fledged campaign, and its setting was explored through its multiplayer modes. It would be surprising if Titanfall 3 abandoned multiplayer entirely, but Respawn’s success with Jedi: Fallen Order might be enough incentive to go all out on a Titanfall campaign.

On the other hand, the continued success of Apex might mean Titanfall is absorbed into its spin-off in some form. Recent leaks suggested Titans and wall-running might be coming to Apex at some point, and essentially combining the games could allow Respawn to consolidate the player bases. The futures of both games are incredibly uncertain, but it is still more likely that Respawn Entertainment puts out Titanfall 3 before it even considers replacing its battle royale with Apex Legends 2.
