DC Universe’s Titans promotes Blackfire actress Damaris Lewis to series regular for season 3. The recent season of the Teen Titans live-action adaptation went deeper into the lore of the characters, including Kory Anders/Koriand’r a.k.a. Starfire (Anna Diop) as she regained her memories. Season 2 explored parts of Kory’s Tamaran history as well as her family ties. Throughout the season, viewers learned that Komand’r a.k.a. Blackfire has taken over the throne back on Tamaran.

But her royal upgrade came with a deadly backstory as she murdered their parents. As Kory has been refusing to return to her home planet, it prompted her sister to get more determined in coming after Kory. When the two sisters last saw each other, the tease of a coming battle between Starfire and Blackfire was set into motion. The season finale “Nightwing” had a bonus scene where a mother gets taken over Blackfire, serving as the host for the Tamaran foe. With her arrival on Earth in the finale’s closing moments, season 3 was set-up in a major way, particularly for Starfire.

According to TV Line, viewers will indeed be seeing more of Lewis as Blackfire next season as the actress has been promoted to series regular. While it wasn’t specified if Blackfire is the official big bad in the next season, it’s now official that she will be a primary focus. Having Blackfire in a larger role will allow Kory to be utilized more as part of the larger plot. Given the show’s large cast, Kory was one of the characters that didn’t get a lot to do in season 2 compared to some of the other players.

With Dick (Brenton Thwaites) having become Nightwing as of the recent episode, season 3 may see Kory grow closer to becoming the Starfire that fans know from the lore, including a super-suit. With season 2 having had several villains taking on the Titans, that’s why it’s unclear if Blackfire is the big bad or just one of them. Slade Wilson a.k.a. Deathstroke (Esai Morales) was initially set to be the main antagonist for the recent season. It ended up being split between him as well as Project Cadmus through Mercy Graves (Natalie Gumede) after she kidnapped and brainwashed Superboy (Joshua Orpin) and Beast Boy (Ryan Potter.)

Having Blackfire in a main regular capacity will allow Kory to have a bigger and personal role next season. The first season was centered around a supernatural threat in Trigon (Seamus Dever) while season 2 had meta-humans through Deathstroke. With Blackfire, the DC Universe drama will now be able to explore the heroes taking on an alien antagonist. With production set to take place in 2020, more details will begin to come out as Titans prepare to return for its third season in the fall.
