After four years, the popular Netflix movie series To All The Boys came to a close. When the first film, To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before, came out in 2018 it became one of the most re-watched original movies and Netflix – a feat the third and final film, To All The Boys: Always and Forever, is most certainly going to repeat. Aside from being one of the best teen romantic comedies in recent years, the film series got an extra boost in popularity thanks to its source material: the best-selling book series of the same name by Jenny Han.

Adapting a book series into a film series isn’t always easy but To All The Boys have managed to do the impossible: make fans of the book series happy. Still, there’s only so much that can be written into a two-hour movie from an over 300-page book and so cuts must be made. While fans definitely agree that To All The Boys has stayed pretty true to the book, the final film did take some liberties when it came to ending Lara Jean and Peter’s epic high school love story.

In the book, Dan takes Trina on a beautiful hike. When they reach their destination, Dan gets down on one knee and asks Trina to marry him. When she says yes, Lara Jean, Kitty, and Peter jump out from their hiding spot. Of course, the moment is made even cuter when Trina realizes that the kids recorded the whole thing.

9 ‘Say Anything’ Reference

Movie Lara Jean and book Lara Jean were both obsessed with ’80s romantic comedies. While the movies stayed true to this character trait they did take some liberties here and there. In the final film, Peter recreates the iconic scene from Say Anything by standing outside of Lara Jean’s bedroom blasting the Stanford theme song.

While the moment is extremely cute, Peter actually recreates a different romantic gesture from an ’80s movie in the books. In the books, Lara Jean turns 18 the day after prom so Peter surprises her with a cake and birthday decorations at the diner. The two then get on the table as Lara Jean blows out the candles just like Sam and Jake did in the legendary John Hughs’ movie Sixteen Candles.

In the movies, Peter and Lara Jean have built their future around the fact that they’re going to attend Stanford together. However, that plan hits a snag when Lara Jean doesn’t get in. To make matters even worse, Lara Jean falls in love with New York University which is 3,000 miles away.

In the books, a similar situation goes down but with different colleges which is partly due to the fact that the books and movies are set in different states. Book Peter ends up going to the University of Virginia (UVA) which Lara Jean also plans to attend since they can live at home. However, Lara Jean ends up waitlisted by UVA but gets accepted and falls in love with the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC) which is farther away.

The South Korea trip happens much differently in the book. For starters, Dan doesn’t go on the trip and instead sends his three daughters so that they can spend time with their grandmother, their mother’s mom, since they don’t know her all that well. The trip also happens after Lara Jean graduates so they can stay there longer. And the final difference is that the trip isn’t talked about extensively in the book like it was in the movie.

In the movie, Lara Jean attempts to sleep with Peter after prom night but he stops it because he feels Lara Jean only wants to sleep with him because they’re going to different colleges. Many fans were shocked that Lara Jean and Peter actually slept together in the movie since it didn’t happen in the book. Instead, Lara Jean attempts to sleep with Peter during “Beach Week” but Peter stops it much as he did in the movie after prom.

In the book, it’s actually Peter who decides he should transfer instead of Lara Jean. While going on an impromptu trip to visit UNC, Lara Jean falls in love with the campus and immediately decides to go there. Understanding that this is the school for Lara Jean, Peter decides he can transfer to UNC from UVA after his freshman year since he doesn’t really care where he goes.

While Lara Jean and Peter break-up briefly in both the book and the movie, the reason for the break-up is vastly different. In the movie, Peter is the one to end things with Lara Jean because he fears they won’t be able to survive a long-distance relationship.

In the books, Lara Jean is the one who breaks up with Peter but not unprompted. Peter’s mom actually asks Lara Jean to break up with so that he won’t transfer to UNC. Not sure what to do, Lara Jean ends up getting drunk at Trina’s bachelorette’s party and breaks up with Peter.

In fact, John Ambrose isn’t the only character from the book missing from the movie. Lara Jean’s older sister Margo comes home with a new boyfriend in the book but there is no mention of her love life in the final movie.

1 How & Where Peter Asks Lara Jean To Prom

Prom was always a big part of the final book and movie since it’s a big moment for many high school seniors. And while prom happened in similar ways, Peter’s promposal was completely different. In the movie, Peter takes Lara Jean to the Corner Cafe to celebrate her getting into Stanford. While there, he surprises her with a plate of pancakes with the words “prom” spelled out in strawberry sauce.

In the books, Peter actually asks Lara Jean to prom during the senior trip to New York City. Peter hides a teddy bear in his backpack and pulls it out as Lara Jean looks into the horizon while at the top of the Empire State Building.
