Pixar has touched many hearts with their grounded stories, breathtaking animation, memorable characters and thoughtful lessons. It is a magnificent feat that Pixar is able to pull off epic stories with twenty-two films and counting (though, there are exceptions, like the only Rotten-scored Pixar movie), and make them resonate for both young and older audiences.

That came to the fact that regardless if the main characters are children or adults, they would find a way to be relatable. To honor the former, here are the top 10 child protagonists in Pixar movies who are memorable and special in their way.

10 Dot (A Bug’s Life)

Dot is the precocious daughter to the Queen and the younger sister to Atta. She is the second to be lined up as princess when Atta inherits the throne as Queen. She is perceived as the only ally to Flik and supporter of his inventions that dismayed the colony. Flik once saved her life from the threatening grasshopper Thumper. This dedication led her to motivate Flik herself at a point when he was downtrodden.

Though she has wings, the young ant was not able to fly until a push to a gorge led her to be fully capable of flight.

9 Violet (The Incredibles movies)

The eldest child to Bob and Helen Parr, Violet possessed the powers of invisibility and creating force fields. In social situations, she is a meek wallflower with self-esteem issues. After the course of her experience during the first Incredibles, she gained a sense of confidence to embrace her identity as a superhuman she once loathed. Her growth is tested in Incredibles 2 when she deals with puberty issues and her dad’s opposition over a boy she likes.

She also has a rivalry with her younger brother Dash, due to his teasing. But she has shown care towards him and Jack-Jack.

8 Ian Lightfoot (Onward)

The latest character on this list, Iandore Lightfoot is an adolescent elf who suddenly discovered his capabilities to cast magic spells. That came full front when his mother Laurel gave him a present from his late father, which turned out to be a magical staff, a rare gem and a step-by-step guide to execute a “visitation spell”. His magic enthusiast brother Barley tried to wield the staff, but Ian pulled it off.

Ian is one of those characters who lately realized that the hopes he is looking for is around the corner. For that, he pulled off a great resolution.

7 Andy (Toy Story movies)

Andy Davis is the owner of Woody and Buzz. Through the course of the first three movies, his growth has been witnessed with his outlook on life affecting the toys (and mostly Woody). While he is generally in the background, his prominence can be seen from the fact that he projects his own perception to the toys he is playing.

On the course of three movies, he is the human with the most character growth. In the first two film, he feels how attached he is to his toys. And in the 3rd film, he did the most valuable choice.

6 Dash (The Incredibles movies)

The middle child to the Parrs, Dash is a hyperactive and excitable kid. Possessing the power of super speed, he initially used these abilities to pull off pranks. But since he has a more positive outlook on showing off his superhuman skills, Dash eagerly projects them in a standout chase scene in a middle and climactic part of the first Incredibles.

The lad had shown a more cautious state after the battle against Syndrome. Though, that would not stop his manic energy in Incredibles 2 from teasing his sister, pranking around their new house and wanting to possess the Incredimobile.

5 Nemo (Finding Nemo)

Nemo is the sole child of Marlin the clownfish with a disfigured right fin. Being the only child left led Marlin to be overprotective of his son. That only led to his adolescent rebellion and being caught by divers to be brought as a pet. He was placed in an aquarium at a dental clinic in Sydney, where he was accepted by the aquarium’s Tank Gang (led by Willem Dafoe’s Gill).

The boy’s quest on assisting his fellow ocean creatures to escape the tank made him grow as a more loving son and let him hone clever ideas at speed.

4 Boo (Monsters, Inc.)

Boo is Monsters, Inc.’s most adorable troublemaker. She escaped as a result of Sully’s rival Randall using a backup door to tamper with his scare score. And with him spotting the door, Sully stumbles upon the 2-year-old, who thinks of him as a large, furry cat. Thus, she called him “Kitty”; Sully and Mike dubbed her as “Boo” and donned her a disguise.

She was rather oblivious that the new realm she entered is inhabited by monsters. Boo would make a mistake though after seeing Sully roar at her. However, she was able to overcome her fear, especially towards Randall.

3 Riley (Inside Out)

The main subject (and setting) of Inside Out, Riley Andersen is a Minnesota native who moved to San Francisco. And her moving is dealt with emotionally adapting to her surroundings and perceiving each receptive moment on what emotion best fits.

While her emotions Joy and Sadness are the nearest witnesses on how her emotions are affecting her personality, Riley is the primary victim of her profound view of her own emotions. She was mostly scene as an upbeat girl. So, it only takes a more accepting view of Sadness to have her come to her senses in a crucial scene.

2 Miguel (Coco)

Miguel is a secret music prodigy in a family who opposed music, due to their great grandfather’s abandonment of the family for music. When he recognized his connection to Mexico’s music legend, Ernesto de la Cruz, Miguel suddenly entered in the Land of the Dead where he reunited with the souls of his deceased relatives to win them over with his love for music.

Miguel’s entire arc on realizing the importance of family against passion is what led him to a revelation of how love for family transcends generations. As a result, Miguel grew to appreciate his own family more.

1 Russell (Up)

Yet, the best child protagonist of all Pixar movies has to be Russell from Up. Being a dedicated and loyal Wilderness Explorer with his own sash of badges, Russell pushed himself to gain a merit badge by “assisting the elderly”. In this case, he tagged along with elderly Carl Fredicksen on a perilous journey on flying his house to a remote scenery in Paradise Falls, South America.

Along the way, Russell gave helpful observations from his experience as a Wilderness Explorer. Likewise, he went all the way to assist Mr. Fredricksen in his journey. And in return, Fredricksen opened himself to the lad.

Throughout the year, Russell has been a popular children’s character who is overeager yet helpful at the same time. And he is a testament for Asian presentation.
