He began acting on television in the British series Skins and found success on television and in his first feature film Slumdog Millionaire. Since then he has starred in various comedies, films based on true events, and action-adventure with The Green Knight being his latest film set to release.

Although he has moved into more film work, he is still recognized from his television work as he continues to move ahead in his film career.

10 Chappie (2015) – 6.8

This Neill Blomkamp directed film imagines a near future where police robots patrol the streets and brutally stop any criminal activity. A group of civilians find a police robot and give him new programming, name him Chappie, and he begins to feel and think for himself.

The rest of the police force sees Chappie as a threat and decides he must be captured and destroyed at all costs. Dev Patel portrays a scientist who is caught between the brutish police, led by Hugh Jackman, and helping Chappie survive.

The film follows a group trying to survive in the hotel focusing on employees who stayed to help save the guests of the hotel and a couple who tries to survive with their baby. Dev Patel portrays Arjun, a waiter that works together with hotel staff to help everyone survive and get back home to his family. Although the film is violent and terrifying, it focuses on the human aspect of the events.

4 Slumdog Millionaire (2008) – 8.0

This film switches back and forth between the present and past in the life of Jamal Malik (Dev Patel) as he answers questions on India’s Who Wants to Be a Millionaire. The authorities assume he has been cheating in the game since he continues to win, but flashbacks show how he happens to know every answer from events in his life.

3 Lion (2016) – 8.0

This film is based on the true story of a young boy born in India being separated from his family and adopted by a family in Australia, including his adoptive mother played by Nicole Kidman. Saroo (Dev Patel) grows up with the family in Australia, but he becomes determined to find his biological family so he travels back to India with the help of Google Earth. The film flashes back and forth between Saroo as an adult looking for his family and as a child when he was lost.

This British comedy-drama show focused on a group of teenagers as it delved into their lives no matter how controversial or serious the subject was, including storylines on family dysfunction, religion, sexuality, gender, and death.
