If Toy Story 5 is made, Toy Story 4’s Gabby Gabby should be the lead instead of Woody or Buzz Lightyear. The Toy Story franchise might have begun over twenty years ago, but it is still extremely popular. Toy Story 4 is the highest-grossing entry in the franchise and brought Woody, Buzz, and the rest of Andy’s previous toys back for one more adventure. The success of the film has left the door open for Toy Story 5 to happen at some point.

Pixar hasn’t officially begun development on Toy Story 5, but newer characters have starred in new material like the Disney+ series Forky Asks a Question. Other characters taking the spotlight is something Pixar should continue to consider if another Toy Story movie is in the future. Audiences have already seen one false ending for the stories of Woody and friends after the franchise continued past Toy Story 3’s emotional finale. Now, Toy Story 4 gave a more satisfying conclusion to Buzz and Woody’s adventure, and their return together or apart in Toy Story 5 could hurt Toy Story 4’s ending after the fact.

Instead of telling more stories with Buzz and Woody, Pixar should make Gabby Gabby (voiced by Christina Hendricks) the lead of Toy Story 5. The pull-string talking doll from the 1950s was initially introduced as a villain in Toy Story 4, but the movie wound up tying her into Woody’s arc in a wonderful way. Gabby Gabby spent decades sitting on the shelf of an antique store with a damaged voice box waiting to find a child to love her. She wanted Woody’s voice box so that she’d be good as new, but was still rejected by the child she wanted to be with after getting it. Instead of Gabby Gabby’s story ending in heartbreak, Toy Story 4 ended with her finding a new home, and Toy Story 5 is the perfect place to continue that story.

A leading role for Gabby Gabby in Toy Story 5 gives Pixar the chance to continue developing an already compelling character. It is already established that she just wants to be loved, but what is life like for Gabby Gabby with her new kid? She could be lucky and have a caring kid like Andy and Bonnie, or one who doesn’t treat her toys that well. She’s also handled rejection once before, but could she do it again as her own kid grows up and becomes disinterested? Either way, the evolution of Gabby Gabby would be fascinating to watch.

It’s also worth noting that a Gabby Gabby-centric Toy Story 5 would allow Pixar to keep the franchise going with a mostly new perspective and characters. Audiences are familiar with her already thanks to Toy Story 4, but that movie only scratched the surface of the character. A story following Gabby Gabby would also mean the introduction of many new characters. The home that she ends up in could be filled with other toys that give Pixar a chance to create more original characters for viewers to fall in love with. Since it isn’t known if Toy Story 5 will even happen, the possibility of the sequel starring Gabby Gabby is unclear, but she is a great option to lead the franchise moving forward.
