A new video teases the hunt for a replacement voice actor on Squidbillies, revealing that Tracy Morgan has secured the part of Early for the 13th and final season. One of Adult Swim’s longest-running shows, Squidbillies follows the Cuylers, a family of ne’er-do-well mud squids living in Douglas County, Georgia. Stuart D. Baker voiced the role of Early, the family’s deadbeat patriarch, for the series’ first 12 seasons. In August 2020, Baker was fired from Squidbillies after publishing racist and sexist social media posts that targeted Dolly Parton and Black Lives Matter. As recently as last month, Squidbillies claimed to be holding auditions for Baker’s replacement.
Now, Adult Swim has posted a new video satirizing the audition process, ultimately unveiling Morgan as the new voice of Early, the backwoods squid. Titled “Early Cuyler VO Recast Auditions (+ Reveal),” the video showcases a number of Adult Swim voice actors trying their hands at the part. Featured in the video is George Lowe (Space Ghost Coast to Coast’s Space Ghost), Dave Willis (Aqua Teen Hunger Force’s Meatwad), Spencer Grammer (Rick and Morty’s Summer), Steve Blum (Toonami’s T.O.M.), and a generic “Trailer Voice Guy,” who brings a cinematic intensity to the redneck squid. Eventually, the video cuts to a live action Tracy Morgan, who introduces himself as the new Early. “I’m Tracy Morgan, and I’m the new voice of Superman,” the comedian ad-libs before correcting himself. “Sorry, Squidbillies.” Morgan is perhaps best known for his Emmy-nominated role as Tracy Jordan on 30 Rock, as well as a seven-year run on Saturday Night Live. He currently stars as Tray Barker on TBS’ The Last O.G., now in its fourth season.
Morgan will join returning Squidbillies cast members Daniel McDevitt as Early’s illegitimate son Rusty, Dana Snyder as Granny, and Patricia French as the dysfunctional Aunt Lil. A trailer for Squidbillies’ upcoming season was released in October, confirming that season 13 will be Squidbillies’ last hurrah. Squidbillies premieres on November 7 at midnight on Adult Swim.
