Just because the battle-themed timed research has come to an end that doesn’t mean Pokémon GO players can’t still rescue Giovanni’s Suicune.

Today marks the start of the third and final set of timed research marking the build to this year’s GO Fest. The challenges are all based on friendship. Last week’s research depended on trainers fending off Team GO Rocket. Pokémon GO’s villains returned and this time, they mounted their assault using hot air balloons.

Most trainers will have spent six long days battling Rocket Grunts, then Leaders, then, if they put in enough leg work, Rocket’s leader Giovanni. Giovanni has been associated with a number of Pokémon during his tenure in the franchise, and they all tend to be cat-based. Persian, Mewtwo, and during his most recent visit to Pokémon GO, Suicune which is based on a leopard.

Upon finding and defeating Giovanni during the battle-themed research, trainers were given the opportunity to catch and then purify his Suicune. A pretty big deal considering how few and far between Suicune-catching opportunities arise in Pokémon GO. If trainers missed out on the chance to bag a Suicune during the research window, don’t despair, Giovanni is sticking around.

Niantic revealed as much on Twitter before the battle-themed research came to an end, making sure trainers didn’t frantically panic in their quest to find Giovanni before the clock hit 10 pm. In order to find Giovanni and his shadow Suicune, trainers will need a Super Rocket Radar. Since that can no longer be done via completing timed research, it will now have to be done by completing Professor Willow’s other research tasks.

The Super Rocket Radar can be attained by completing the Troubling Situation and A Professor’s Work is Never Done Special Research. Once they have the radar, the hunt for Giovanni can begin. The Rocket boss can be found floating around in his balloon but be warned, Grunts can disguise themselves as the boss, so it’s easy to be fooled by one who isn’t actually the Giovanni you’re looking for. It’s also not clear at this point how long Giovanni encounters will remain in-game.
