The evil version of Bumblebee in an upside-down Transformers universe has assumed the role of the traitorous Starscream except he plays the part much more effectively than his Decepticon counterpart.
Fueling the Autobot’s thirst to betray the tyrannical Optimus Prime of this universe is a past much more tragic than the normal version of Starscream, as revealed in Transformers: Shattered Glass #4 by writer Danny Lore, artist Daniel Khanna, inker Priscilla Tramontano, colorist John-Paul Bove, and letterer Neil Uyetake. This tragedy coincidentally flips the origin of Bumblebee’s first name, Goldbug. Before he changed his identity, Bumblebee was a proud warrior whose thirst to prove himself to Optimus Prime deepened when he failed to destroy Megatron at the most opportune time, a failure that culminated in his own destruction at the hands of the Decepticon leader.
Although the Autobots later rebuild him with a better body, Bumblebee appears to appreciate other aspects of his transformation more, just based on the fact he could now change his name. Even though he rose to Optimus Prime’s second in command like Starscream did with Megatron, Bumblebee’s comrades still mocked him for his name, so upon his revitalization, Bumblebee dubs himself Goldbug – a name that his counterpart from the normal Transformers universe was first called before being renamed Bumblebee. However, his desire to prove himself after his defeat against Megatron has been perpetually stunted by none other than Optimus Prime. For example, the newly-christened Goldbug learns that Prime only approved his rehabilitation because he had the means, not out of necessity, continuing a pattern of disrespect that Prime would continue to employ by failing to call him by his new name and not taking his concerns seriously, similarly to what Starscream experiences under Megatron.
However, unlike Starscream, who just seeks to overthrow Megatron because he’s the leader of the Decepticons, Goldbug has a more personal vendetta against Prime for failing to take him seriously. Interestingly, this year’s Transformers Halloween special issue further removes Starscream from Megatron. Starscream’s internal monologues in the special reveal that he only wishes to vanquish his enemies without bothering to ask himself why. Megatron’s name isn’t even mentioned once during these extensive monologues, either, further diminishing Megatron’s importance to Starscream by demoting him to just another generic enemy. This could explain why Starscream rarely wins against Megatron. Conversely, the evil Goldbug’s need for revenge in the upside-down universe empowers him to the point where he actually bests Prime in battle while also fighting against other Transformers simultaneously. However, Goldbug only appears to stun the Autobot leader and decides to take advantage of this time to escape – ironically to finish torturing the good Starscream to get him to betray the Decepticons.
Coincidentally, this evil version of Bumblebee mirrors his good counterpart in IDW’s main continuity. Early on, the good Bumblebee receives one of his kind’s most distinguished honors when he is chosen to mentor a new forging named Rubble, a title that’s even more honorable considering that the creation of forgings is rarer than they ever have been. And when Rubble is murdered, Bumblebee loses control and assassinates his killer, an act of aggression that’s especially surprising as the killing of Transformers was – like forgings – nonexistent at the time.
Both the evil and good Bumblebee had no choice but to betray their principles due to forces out of their control to obtain the justice they feel they or another deserves. And like the normal Starscream, the evil Bumblebee seeks this by trying to usurp his leader – and doing a better job at it, too.
