While the next entry in the Call of Duty franchise has not been announced, developer Treyarch is meeting with professional esport players for feedback.

The news comes from pro-player Chance, who recently responded to a thread in a competitive Call of Duty subreddit. In the post, a user stated Call of Duty Modern Warfare turned them off the franchise, and they may not want to pick up the next game. Citing lack of ranked play, prestige, and incentive to get better, the Redditor seems frustrated at how Infinity Ward’s latest title handles online play.

Chance jumped in to tell players that Treyarch is taking the game’s development seriously, and they want the 2020 title to have a strong focus on competitive play. When another Redditor asked if this was just yearly hype building, Chance opened up.

“Just meetings [with] the devs to discuss ‘competitive philosophy’,” writes the pro-player, who adds that there was more to the conversations. “I know how hopeless some of you are but all I want is for us as a community to get excited and to get behind and support the devs over at Treyarch”

Unfortunately, Chance doesn’t delve too deep into how those talks went, or what specifically was discussed. He alludes to a possible non-disclosure agreement, so we probably won’t know exactly what Treyarch is looking to do. Still, consulting the competitive scene is common practice for many studios.

Despite Chance’s relative secrecy, leaks for the 2020 Call of Duty game have made their way to the internet. To start, the game is a new entry in the Black Ops series for the franchise, though it’s unclear if it is a direct sequel, reboot, or something else entirely. Like most other games in the series, rumors say it will have a single-player mode, and from Chance’s recent comments, we know Treyarch is focusing on online play. Our first glimpse of the game was supposed to come during the PlayStation 5 event – however, the game’s reveal was delayed along with Sony’s stream.

While some long-time competitive players have been dissatisfied with Modern Warfare’s offerings, the game hosts a robust online community. There are 48,200,000 users since May 2020, with 4,000,000 new users joining in just that month alone. Adding to this, there are around 5,100,000 monthly active users.

As for Call of Duty 2020, we’ll have to wait and see what Treyarch has in store. The game is slated for a holiday release.
