In this chapter, you’ll have to deal with a rainy battle against some familiar faces, and it’s a doozy if you’re not prepared. But you are prepared – you’ve got us.

Cordelia ruminates on her new role as queen, consulting Avlora for advice. The response, however, is less than agreeable. Just a few feet away, the Mean Twins, as ever, do their mean thing.

Serenoa and co. plan their upcoming journey, sure to be fraught with unwanted attention. And that’s without mentioning the rain – surely that won’t have an impact on the following scenes…

The party, being battered by the heavy rainfall, take a moment to rest and wait out the weather at an abandoned village. Before setting up camp, though, Serenoa decides to investigate the area. By now, you know what that means.

Once you have everything you need, end the exploration. After a few moments of sweetness at the encampment, the inevitable tragedy happens as it turns out the salt was left unguarded, ripe for any bandit to steal.

Now would be a good time to recruit anyone you can through Character Stories, check out any new Quietuses you can buy, and upgrade your favorite characters’ weapons.

It seems some familiar faces are the ones behind the salt theft. Looks like it’s time to put them down a second time.

Battle Overview

The biggest hindrance in this battle might well be the rainstorm that just doesn’t seem to let up at all. Apart from that, it’s a pretty even spread of enemy types headed by the two Bandit Bosses.

This battle provides multiple opportunities for optional characters to shine. Jens can be put to work here to build ladders up to the tall cliffs, lettings your units chase down the ranged bandits without too much hassle.

Ezana, on the other hand, is fantastic thanks to her Rite of Lightning spell – it synergizes perfectly with the rain and the puddles it creates, creating potentially massive-chan reactions. Narve can also do this with Spark, but Ezana’s ability has a larger range. Be careful that your allies don’t get caught in the chain, though!

Hughette is as useful as ever in this battle thanks to her ability to fly. Set her up on a roof and get her spreading Blind and Immobilize around the battlefield as you see fit. If you’ve upgraded her weapon, she’ll probably be able to take the mages out in two hits. If so, they’re prime targets.

You’ll want to be very wary of the enemy Bowmen, though. They can also use Shadowstitching Arrow and will want to target Hughette as a point of priority thanks to her weakness to arrows.

The healers in this battle are very annoying, but shouldn’t make too much of an impact on your strategy. Keep your units together and focus your damage output on one or two enemies at a time. You’ll definitely win the damage race.

The Bandit Bruisers have access to the Provoke ability, which will make any affected units unable to attack any other enemy. This works just like Erador’s version of the ability and lasts two turns, so it’s very frustrating. Try to nuke the Bruisers as soon as possible.

Of the two bosses, Travis will likely be the first you reach. He’s gotten a bit more buff since Chapter One, so be on your guard! He still has his strong physical attack and the ability to toss one of your units behind him, but now he becomes even tankier when he has no allies around.

However, his most dangerous move is Impeding Strike. This will deal damage to up to three units at a time and delay their turns to boot. You really don’t want to be hit by this.

To take down this Bandit Boss, take advantage of his very low magic defense. Even in the rain, a fiery bolt of Blazing Chains will make Frederica worth her weight in salt. Alternatively, Narve and Ezana can put a big dent in him.

Status ailments also work, so that’s another option – try Anna’s Poison or Hughette’s Shadowstitching Arrow.

Trish is definitely the biggest threat in this fight. She has great range with her short bow and her damage output is phenomenal. If you can’t get to her quickly, she’ll pick your characters off one by one before you can even scratch her.

For this reason, you’ll want to plan your strategy around getting your units up in her face as soon as you feasibly can. The more you can keep Trish on the run and away from your squishier units (read: mages responsible for dealing with Travis) the better.

Trish likes to use the verticality of the map to her advantage, leaping out of range of your strongest warriors. Anna is a good counter to that strategy thanks to her Surmount ability. Use her to threaten Trish and whittle down her HP, preferably with powerful backstabs.

Once the two bosses are down, the rest of this battle will likely be spent mopping up some Bowmen and Battlemages stuck on the outskirts of the map. It doesn’t take long to get them all, especially if your mages are still alive.

With that, Serenoa and co. reach Aesfrost with their illegal contraband. It seems like another battle is about to commence… But Svarog comes in to save the day. And with that, Chapter Eight comes to a close.
