Aventus Aretino asks you to kill Grelod the Kind, the matriarch of Riften’s orphanage. It seems a bit extreme, eh? She can’t be that bad. Regardless, it’s how you join the Dark Brotherhood so off you pop to Honorhall to get it done. But maybe it was justified – as it turns out, she shackles the kids to the wall in a little closet.

If you head inside, turn left, and go to the main room full of beds, there’s a door on the right. One Reddit user pointed out that when you go inside, there are shackles attached to the walls. Next to them is a bucket – it’s no doubt the kids’ toilet when they’re in ‘time out.’

It’s subtle, easy-to-miss, and tucked away, but it indicates that Grelod would punish kids by locking them in a room. But she didn’t just lock the door – she tied them up. Now it’s easier to understand why Aretino ran away and summoned the Dark Brotherhood. It also explains why the kids cheered when she died. Can you really blame them?

It’s a dimly lit room so if you ever walked in, it’d be easy to miss these breadcrumbs. At first glance, it’s an empty closet with a bucket. Given how you don’t visit the orphanage often besides when you murder Grelod or adopt a kid, it’s no surprise that so many missed this detail.

However, according to a commenter on the post, the kids reveal the room’s existence if you talk to them enough – one says that they don’t want to be locked in there again.

Another commenter also shared that Grelod recruits certain kids for the Thieves Guild – if you talk to some of the members, they’ll say they joined the roguish band because of the orphanage.

It’s all unsettling and cruel, but you can help out by backstabbing her, poisoning her, using frenzy on her, or just going with a good ol’ fashioned mace to the skull. Just be sure you have soul trap on so she gets stuck in the Cairn for eternity, wandering aimlessly.
