Turns Out Pokémon Sword & Shield Will NOT Have 18 Gyms

The dreams of a Dark-type Gym finally making its way into the Pokémon series are starting to drift away, as it has been revealed that Pokémon Sword & Shield will not include eighteen different Gyms, as had been previously reported.

The Pokémon series briefly abandoned the concept of Gyms during the Pokémon Sun & Moon era, as the Alola region used the Island Challenge instead. The Pokémon Gyms are due to return in Pokémon Sword & Shield, along with version-exclusive Gym Leaders.

Game Informer had recently reported that the developers of Pokémon Sword & Shield had stated that the games would include eighteen Pokémon Gyms that were split into two different leagues. The Pokémon Company has since clarified the matter. According to Serebii, Pokémon Sword & Shield will include the same number of Gyms as the other games in the series and not eighteen.

The idea of there being eighteen Gyms in the Galar region seems to have stemmed from a miscommunication between The Pokémon Company and Game Informer. It seems that the Galar region does include eighteen Gyms, but that they rotate between the leagues and the player will only be able to face a few of them over the course of the game. It’s possible that this is just lore-building in order to compare the Pokémon League of the Galar region to soccer and its multiple leagues.

Pokémon Gold & Silver proved that the series could include more than eight Gyms, which led to an entertaining post-game run of battles against the Gym Leaders from Pokémon Red & Blur. If the Galar region had eighteen Gyms, then it would have been able to represent every Pokémon type that exists in the game, which meant that Dark-type would have finally had its own Gym. The fact that Pokémon Sword & Shield won’t include eighteen Gyms is a little deflating, as it seemed as if Game Freak was going in a new direction with its approach to Gyms, rather than relying on the same old formula from the previous games in the series.

Pokémon Sword & Shield will be released for the Nintendo Switch on November 15, 2019.
