A new trailer has been released for the upcoming twenty-first movie in the Pokémon franchise. This film will be called Pokémon the Movie: The Power of Us and it follows on from the events of Pokémon the Movie: I Choose You! which was released in 2017.

Pokémon the Movie: The Power of Us is an ensemble piece, with Ash & Pikachu just being one part of the overall story. The Power of Us follows the story of five different characters who Ash encounters during the Wind Festival in Fura City. These people have different stories that involve the Pokémon in their life.

The Wind Festival is devoted to Lugia, who is said to appear during each festival and grant a blessed wind to the attendees. This is in stark contrast to how Lugia is presented in the various Pokédex entries in the series, where it is stated that Lugia stays away from humanity, as the wind it summons is so powerful that it can annihilate entire settlements with ease.

The title of Pokémon the Movie: The Power of Us seems to be a shoutout to the second Pokémon movie, which was called Pokémon the Movie 2000: The Power of One. The fact that Lugia plays an important role in both films is almost certainly meant to reflect a connection between the two movies.

It bears mentioning that Pokémon the Movie: The Power of Us (and its predecessor) both take place in a separate reality from the TV show universe. This means that Ash, Pikachu, and Team Rocket are the only returning characters from the Pokémon anime, which makes sense, considering that they are the longest-running characters in the series, with Ash & Pikachu debuting in the first episode and Team Rocket first blasting off in the second episode.

The past two Pokémon movies have reflected a change in direction for the series, with the previous films only existing to show off the latest Legendary Pokémon. The fact that the new movies are more focused on telling a strong story can only be an improvement upon Ash stumbling across another incredibly powerful Pokémon that he never bothers to catch.

Pokémon the Movie: The Power of Us will receive its first release outside of Japan on November 24th.
