Even though the Breaking Dawn novel came out over a decade ago and the final installment in Summit’s Twilight film series hit theaters in 2012, fans still refuse to say goodbye to Stephenie Meyer’s fictional world of vampires and shapeshifters. The Twilight series primarily focused on Bella Swan and her two supernatural suitors Edward Cullen and Jacob Black, but it was also filled with countless other fascinating and dynamic characters whom readers and viewers alike have found themselves drawn to and can’t stop obsessing over.
Fans have loved Alice and Emmett Cullen since their kind-hearted, fun-loving characters were first introduced, but some Twihards still can’t figure out their feelings about Edward’s sister Rosalie. Her initial coldness towards Bella kept her from being as instantly-likable as some of the other members of the Olympic coven, but when Meyer revealed some details from her tragic backstory, her motivations were made clearer and Rosalie became far more sympathetic and relatable. 20 ROSALIE GREW UP WEALTHY AND SPOILED
The Cullen family was known for being incredibly wealthy, but Rosalie was well-off and spoiled long before she became a vampire. She was the daughter of a successful banker, and her family managed to stay rich even while the Great Depression sent countless others into poverty.
Rosalie’s parents took great pride in her stunning looks, and her father loved buying her beautiful clothes so she’d garner the admiration of every man she passed and the envy of all of her female friends. This constant praise and pampering caused Rosalie to grow up very self-absorbed and materialistic. She became aware of this personality flaw later in her life, but she struggled to change.
19 SHE KNEW HOW SHALLOW SHE WAS, BUT DIDN’T CARE
Rosalie’s parents always wanted more out of life despite their already elevated status, and constantly tried to climb the social ladder. Rosalie, however, was perfectly happy where she was because all she cared about was being the most beautiful woman around.

It worked—Royce started sending roses to her home, and after commenting that Rosalie’s eyes were like violets, he began sending violets as well.
Their relationship was solely based on physical attraction, as Royce was too busy at the bank to actually spend time with or truly get to know Rosalie. 15 SHE WAS ATTACKED BY HER FIANCEE AND HIS FRIENDS
While walking home following her visit to Vera’s house, Rosalie heard someone call her name. She proceeded to walk towards a group of men, which turned out to consist of Royce and his friends. She was already a bit shaken by her thoughts about her loveless relationship, so when Royce started bragging to the group about his fiancee’s incredible beauty, Rosalie struggled to play along.
This upset Royce, and prompted him and his equally inebriated friends to take advantage of her and then leave her in the streets to perish. The men laughed as they walked away from her nearly-lifeless body. Since Rosalie was covered in blood, she luckily attracted Carlisle Cullen, a vampire doctor who didn’t feed on human blood.
14 CARLISLE TURNED HER WITHOUT HER PERMISSION
Without taking time to really consider the ramifications of turning Rosalie into a vampire against her wishes, Carlisle carried her to a room and began her transformation. When Rosalie’s pain finally started to subside, she was happy because she thought she was finally passing away, but then she felt something sharp cutting her throat, wrist, and ankles.
Carlisle held her hand and explained that she was becoming a vampire. Rosalie was initially too shocked to decide if she grateful that Carlisle saved her, but she later resented him for denying her the opportunity to determine whether or not an immortal life was something she even wanted. She eventually found as a vampire, but it’s still unclear if she’d have preferred moving on to the afterlife that night.
13 CARLISLE AND ESME HOPED TO PAIR ROSALIE WITH EDWARD
Carlisle was one of the most gentle characters in the entire Twilight series, and his refusal to hurt others prompted him to learn to control his vampiric impulses and solely consume animal blood. Carlisle believed that all human life was sacred, but his morality actually wasn’t his primary motivator when it came to saving Rosalie.

She eliminated the guards with ease, and then tortured Royce before ending his life. 10 SHE SAVED EMMETT’S LIFE AFTER A BEAR ATTACK
In 1935, two years after Rosalie’s transformation, she traveled to Tennessee and stumbled across a man named Emmett McCarty as he was being mauled by a bear. She found herself attracted to the nearly-deceased young man, so she chose to rescue him.
Emmett was covered in blood, but Rosalie actually managed to carry him over one hundred miles to Carlisle without giving in to her vampiric urges. She then begged Carlisle to turn him into a vampire, even though she was still upset about being turned without giving consent first. Carlisle obliged, and Emmett luckily accepted his new status right away and became Rosalie’s mate. From that day on, they rarely left each other’s side.
9 SHE WASN’T REALLY RELATED TO HER “TWIN” JASPER
In 1950, Alice’s vision of a happy future with the Cullen family prompted her and her mate Jasper to seek out and join the Olympic Coven. Alice’s upbeat personality helped her become close to the similarly-optimistic Emmett, while Jasper’s sullenness made him far more like Rosalie.
Due to their similar personalities and light physical features, Rosalie and Jasper often played the role of biological siblings when they attended school together. At Forks High School, the duo actually claimed to be twins. Even though Rosalie was seventeen when she was turned and Jasper was nineteen when he was made into a vampire, no one even questioned this false claim.
8 ROSALIE WAS ACTUALLY A VERY SKILLED MECHANIC
Both of Bella’s love interests were skilled mechanics. Edward loved collecting and fixing cars, while Jacob enjoyed working on motorcycles. According to The Twilight Saga: The Official Illustrated Guide, however, Rosalie was actually the series’ most proficient mechanic.
Rosalie apparently had a hobby of enhancing cars. She was a musician, just like Edward, but she wasn’t quite as good—her mechanical skill was the one trait that surpassed her brother’s. She earned degrees from several universities in electrical engineering, but since she appeared to be too young to get a job fixing cars, she merely did her mechanical work in private. Like a few of her other siblings, Rosalie also studied medicine to help Carlisle keep up-to-date with the latest advances.
7 ROSALIE AND EMMETT WENT ON FREQUENT “HONEYMOONS” TOGETHER
Edward once made a joke to Bella that it was occasionally difficult to be within a five-mile radius of Rosalie and Emmett, because they constantly lived life like they were on their honeymoon. The two soulmates got married to renew their vows to each other every few years, and often separated themselves from their adopted family so they could live as a “newlywed” couple.

5 SHE WAS THE ONLY CULLEN CHILD TO KEEP HER REAL LAST NAME
Rosalie Hale was always very proud of her family and upbringing, so it was definitely appropriate that she was the only one of Carlisle and Esme’s adopted children to keep their real full name as a vampire.
Edward was actually born Edward Masen Jr., but he changed his last name to match Carlisle’s shortly after his vampire parents took him in. Mary Alice Brandon and Emmett McCarty became Alice and Emmett Cullen because they shared Edward’s brown hair and could pass as his siblings whenever they attended school together. Jasper Whitlock, however, changed his last name to Hale to match his supposed biological sister (and occasional “twin”), Rosalie. Rosalie didn’t return home after she and the Cullens left Rochester, so no one ever noticed that she shared the exact name and appearance of the Rosalie Hale who disappeared in 1933.
4 SHE WAS 90 YEARS OLD AT THE START OF TWILIGHT
Rosalie Hale was considered to be one of the most beautiful teenagers enrolled at Forks High School, but she definitely wasn’t a young woman. She was born way back in 1915, so when Bella Swan moved to Washington and was first introduced to Rosalie during the events of Twilight in 2005, the stunning vampire was actually ninety years old.
Rosalie had been with Emmett for seventy years at that point, so it’s incredible that the couple still seemed to be so much in love while they walked the halls of Forks High together. They had also graduated from countless schools already, but they still managed to take their studies at Bella’s school seriously.
3 SHE CONSIDERED ENDING BELLA’S LIFE
When Rosalie asked Edward “what’s she to me?” after her adopted brother asked her to protect Bella in Twilight, some fans immediately decided they disliked the Olympic coven’s most beautiful member. That wasn’t even the best example of Rosalie’s dislike for Edward’s soulmate, though—at one point, she actually considered ending Bella’s life.
Rosalie was furious when Edward used his vampire speed and strength to save Bella from being crushed by a car, and planned on eliminating Bella to keep her from telling anyone the Cullen family’s secret. She actually enjoyed life in Forks, and was willing to do anything it took to stay there for a few more years. 2 ROSALIE ACTUALLY WANTED TO BE LESS BEAUTIFUL
Rosalie was incredibly proud of her beauty as a human, and while she didn’t like being a vampire, she wasn’t shy about displaying her enhanced good looks after she was turned. It always seemed like she loved being so ridiculously attractive, but Nikki Reed, who portrayed Rosalie in the Summit Entertainment Twilight Saga films, thinks otherwise.
In an interview with MTV, Reed stated, “Rosalie really just wanted to be normal; that’s what she’s always wanted. Even when she was normal, she didn’t want to be as beautiful as she was. She didn’t want to stand out as much as she does. She just wanted to be like an average young woman who got married and had a family.”
1 NIKKI REED HAD TO WEAR A WIG TO PLAY ROSALIE
Nikki Reed’s natural hair color is brown, so when she was cast as Rosalie for the first Twilight movie, she had to dye her locks blonde to better resemble her character. Unfortunately, the constant bleaching for that film caused her hair to start to fall out, so she asked for permission to simply wear blonde wigs instead for the filming of New Moon.
Even though vampires’ appearances aren’t supposed to be capable of change, audiences luckily didn’t voice too many concerns regarding the noticeable difference in Rosalie’s hairstyle between the first and second films in the franchise, so Reed was given permission to continue wearing blonde wigs for the saga’s final three films, Eclipse, Breaking Dawn – Part 1 and Breaking Dawn – Part 2.
