Twitch Bans President Disrespect For Hateful Conduct

After a week that has seen far too many allegations of abuse and harassment levied against streamers and other gaming industry professionals, Twitch is bringing out the big guns to prove no one is above the rules with some high profile bans. Not only did they ban Dr. Disrespect, who has over 4.39 million followers, but they’ve now banned the President of The United States himself, Donald Trump. While the reason for Dr. Disrespect’s ban still remains unknown, the President has been banned for “hateful conduct.”

In a statement given to The Verge, a Twitch spokesperson confirmed the ban and the reason stating:

“Like anyone else, politicians on Twitch must adhere to our Terms of Service and Community Guidelines. We do not make exceptions for political or newsworthy content, and will take action on content reported to us that violates our rules.”

Twitch also confirmed that the offending content has been removed.

Recent problematic content on the President’s channel included a rebroadcast of the rally where he said that Mexico was sending rapists to the United States. He also made further racist comments at the recent rally in Tulsa.

Despite an inconsistent background regarding moderation, Twitch appears to be finally keeping to the promise of being committed to working towards making the streaming community safer for all.

Previously inconsistency regarding guidelines has led to chaos in the streaming community, with many feeling Twitch was playing favorites with channels that brought in huge audiences. Streamers such as Alinity, famous for her cat throwing incident and her self imposed ban for breaking guidelines, have often got away with breaking guidelines without consequence.

These two high profile bans in short succession, along with a string of other bans for streamers accused of harassment, are certainly sending a strong message that the time of controversial streamers feeling untouchable is over.

Recently the world has become a lot more vocal about speaking out against harassment, abuse, and racism. There are ongoing worldwide protests for the Black Lives Matter movement, seeking to stamp out racism and police brutality. The Me Too movement is also still ongoing, encouraging victims of harassment to speak out.

With viewers becoming more vocal about what they consider to be unacceptable behavior Twitch’s hard line is sure to be welcomed, just not by Trump.
