Earlier this month, Twitch got hacked. According to the streaming giant, a change in Twitch’s server configuration allowed access by “an unauthorized third party,” who managed to steal 125 GB of data. That data leak included Twitch’s source code as well as information on how much Twitch pays its top creators.
As is customary for such data breaches, Twitch recommended everyone change their passwords even though there was “no indication” anyone’s login credentials were exposed. The Amazon streaming platform then promised a thorough investigation to confirm.
It now seems like Twitch has concluded its investigation and can confirm that no passwords or credit cards were part of the breach, which comes as quite a relief.
“Twitch passwords have not been exposed. We are also confident that systems that store Twitch login credentials, which are hashed with bcrypt, were not accessed, nor were full credit card numbers or ACH / bank information,” Twitch wrote in a recent blog update. “The exposed data primarily contained documents from Twitch’s source code repository, as well as a subset of creator payout data.”
Twitch added that the stolen files only exposed a “small fraction of users and the customer impact is minimal.” That said, the users whose info was stolen were Twitch’s biggest content creators, and they certainly didn’t appreciate their payouts plastered all over the internet.
This hack combined with YouTube’s recent push into streaming seems to have spooked Twitch into taking desperate measures, according to xQc. He theorized that Twitch’s unbanning of previously perma-banned streamers is an attempt to shore up interest in the beleaguered streaming service that has seen some of its top talent poached by YouTube.
Streamers like Velvet_7 and Axium, who were both previously handed lifetime bans, have made triumphant returns to Twitch in recent days. It’s still uncertain whether either has learned their lesson or if they’ll just go back to their regular hijinx, perhaps resulting in another ban.
