Developer Two Point Studios has some sad news today. The console port of its hit management sim Two Point Hospital has contracted a case of “delayitis.” Originally scheduled for a release this year, the game has been pushed to early 2020 so that the team can iron out some kinks.

In a blog over on its website, the devs explained why they felt a delay was needed. Brad Laycock, brand director for Two Point Studios, wrote, “Put simply: making a management simulation game on three consoles (and making it the best it possibly can be on all three), is a tricky programming puzzle.” That’s putting it lightly.

After a successful showing at Gamescom, Two Point Studios was floored by the positive reception it received. Not wishing to disappoint anyone, it made the decision to delay the game so that the launch goes without a hitch. This is something other publishers should take note of: it’s better to launch with minimal issues than rush things out to market.

Laycock further stressed that “We have to take the game apart and figure out how to fit it into what is essentially a smaller box. That takes a fair amount of time and engineering work, and it turns out we need to take a little more to iron out the remaining creases.”

While obviously disappointing, Two Point Hospital’s console conversion is far from canceled. With the game still regularly receiving small DLC updates on PC, Two Point Studios is clearly dedicated to getting things right. Fans have appreciated that, too, with the PC original being very successful on launch.

Management sims have typically not fared well on consoles. Being primarily developed for the PC platform, it’s difficult to translate mouse and keyboard actions to a gamepad. This isn’t an action title, after all, so certain concessions need to be made to get the game up and running.

It’s not difficult to imagine that Two Point Studios is creating an entirely original control scheme here. That’s a daunting task, even for an accomplished studio. If everything works out in the end, though, then the delay will be worth it.
