Anchor’s are up once again as Ubisoft has reportedly given the green light for a Skull & Bones revival. The open-world pirate game that has been delayed multiple times will finally have another chance to set sail.

According to Video Games Chronicle, sources have heard whispers regarding the reboot of the vessel adventure that never really found its sea legs. Skull & Bones will be the first title brought to the market by Ubisoft’s Singapore studio that has been stuck riding the waves of postponement since its announcement back at E3 2017. The game was initially pegged as a late 2018 release that was then repeatedly pushed back due to creative misfires. The nautical open-world was apparently struggling to dock within Ubisoft’s established catalogue, including Watch Dogs and The Division, which consequently delayed its debut. The developers wanted Skull & Bones to stand as a unique IP and until the game had achieved originality, it would not disembark.

The team at Ubisoft Singapore commented – during the earlier days of development – that their inspiration was drawn from the naval battles they worked on in Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag. It was apparent that the gaming market was rather barren when it came to triple A pirate titles but the team refused to be comparable to other Ubisoft productions when it came to game mechanics. After promising to launch a beta test during E3 2018, Ubisoft failed to unveil Skull & Bones yet again that subsequently led to a planned reboot in 2019 that abandoned the parameters of other Ubisoft open-worlds.

Its preliminary concept included PvP multiplayer battles, customizable vessels and an ocean waiting to be explored, but Skull & Bones is now flying a new flag post-hiatus. It’s been reported that the game format has now changed to a ‘live’ game model that deploys constant world quests, characters and narratives that progress over time. There were also talks of various Fortnite features being a source of enlightenment for the development team that encouraged the change and put the wind back in their sails. During this new wave of inspiration, it was reported that creative director Justin Farren had departed from the project after the new direction was taken.

As Skull & Bones failed to make an appearance during Ubsifot Forward, there’s really no way of telling when this exciting project will finally show up on the map.
