3000 “pop-culture” fans were asked which next-gen console they are most excited about, and the results make for grim reading for Xbox.
PlayStation is about to enter its fifth console battle and for the most part across the previous four, it has enjoyed a lot of success. The PS1’s sales were triple that of the Nintendo 64, the PS2 is the best-selling console of all time, and the PS4’s 110 million units sold has eclipsed the Xbox One’s numbers. The only hiccup was the PS3, and even that scraped a narrow victory over the Xbox 360.
Suffice to say, it’s probably safe to assume that the PS5 will outsell the Xbox Series X in the coming generation. That isn’t nailed on to come true, of course, and gamers in the US are actually split almost right down the middle when it comes to which console they are anticipating most.
However, it’s a very different story in the UK. Experince12 polled 3000 “pop culture fans” to find out which next-gen console British gamers are the most excited about. Turns out it’s the PS5, and it isn’t even close. 84% of those polled revealed that they are more excited about the PS5 than they are about the Series X, and unless Microsoft reveals something groundbreaking, chances are that excitement will translate into sales.
There is a caveat attached to these findings though, and it comes in the form of when the survey was conducted. Between June 25, 2020, and July 2, 2020. That means it happened after the PS5’s big reveal event, but before the one for the Series X. Perhaps after getting a first look at Halo Infinite, and discovering a new Fable is on the way, more British gamers will have been convinced to switch their allegiance.
There’s also the not-so-minor matter of how Sony and Microsoft plan to approach the next generation. Aside from a few crossover titles early on, once the PS5 is released, the PS4 will be left behind. As for Xbox, it has already revealed all titles for the first couple of years will be released on Series X, Xbox One, and PC. A nice gesture, but one that will lead to fewer Xbox fans rushing out on launch day to pick up a Series X.
