Ultima Thule is the final location in Final Fantasy XIV: Endwalker, an expansion to Final Fantasy XIV, with several Aether Current locations to find and collect. This can only be achieved once the main quest is completed, and will require players to unlock all three islands in the Ultima Zone.
Aether Currents are illuminated floating green objects players can acquire by interacting with them. Once a player collects all ten for an area, they will unlock the ability to fly with the flying mechanic introduced in Final Fantasy XIV’s first expansion, Heavensward for that specific area. Players must reach level 20 before they unlock a mount, and there are over 200 mounts to collect and ride, many of which are unlocked by completing quests.
After completing the main quest in Final Fantasy XIV: Endwalker, players will find themselves in the starry moonscape of Hydaelyn. This area is home to some enemies and obstacles, but is primarily an open expanse. Ultima Zone is a collection of islands in the world of Hydaelyn, and requires a player to complete the main story quest to unlock the second and third island.
FFXIV: Endwalker Aether Current Locations In Ultima Thule
Before a player can begin to collect Aether, it is important to note the Aether Compass will no longer be registered as a key item. Rather, players can find their Aether Compass in the collections tab, under the menu section for Duty. Players can use the Aether Compass to locate the nearest Aether Current to their character on a map, but they can only use the map to identify Aether obtained through quests, and not those scattered in the overworld.
A player can acquire a total of 15 Aether Currents in Ultima Thule, five from quests, and 10 from the overworld in Final Fantasy XIV: Endwalker. A player must collect 10 Aether Currents to fly using a mount. The overworld locations are the Ostrakon Deka-hexi and Ostrakon Tria, each with five. There are no overworld Aether Currents on Ostrakon Deka-okto or Ostrakon Hena.
To find the Aether, players may need to battle enemies and perform platforming challenges. Players should note most of the overworld Aether Currents are easily accessible, as they are not hidden behind objects or in difficult-to-spot locations, like behind corners. The landscape is flat, which allows players to spot glowing objects easily.
One Aether Current location Final Fantasy XIV: Endwalker is at the top of a winding tower in the Southwest of Ostrakon Tria. There is another nearby in the same area, and a third Aether Current in the top Northwest of the island. The other two for this area are Northeast and North from the center of the Ostrakon Tria map.
Ostrakon Deka-hexi is a small region, so players may find the Aether Current locations without much effort. Players will find an Aether Current in the farthest point Northeast, two in the South, one North, and one Northwest. Players can open the in-game Final Fantasy XIV: Endwalker map at any time to navigate the area.
The five quest Aether Currents will be identified on the player’s map with a Quest icon with a plus symbol on it. The final Aether Current in Final Fantasy XIV: Endwalker will not be represented this way, as it is given as a reward for finishing the main story quest in the Ultima Zone.
