However, before the highly-anticipated release of Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time in October, fans came across a fun, furry surprise in one of the most unlikely of sources. Near the beginning of 2016’s Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, retired treasure hunter Nathan Drake and his unwitting-partner-in-adventure-turned-wife Elena are relaxing at home when Nathan starts playing a level of the original Crash Bandicoot. This leads to a spot-on recreation of the classic platformer’s graphics and gameplay as Elena humorously coaches her husband on how to play the game – and rubs it in when he falls short of the high score. This charming nod to developer Naughty Dog’s more colorful roots arguably sparked new interest in Crash, and it came right on the heels of Activision announcing the release of 2017’s remaster of the original three games in Crash Bandicoot: N. Sane Trilogy – which in turn eventually led to Crash Bandicoot 4.

Now, Crash and Coco are paying Nathan and Elena back in a new trailer for Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time, which was posted to the official Crash Bandicoot Twitter account earlier today. This brief scene shows the Bandicoot siblings hanging out in their island home (just like Nathan and Elena), with Coco playing Uncharted 4 and Crash cheering her on while slurping on a soda. Things get tense when Coco enters a set piece sequence of a tower collapsing around Nathan Drake, and she starts pounding on her controller furiously as Crash humorously panics. Luckily, she makes it out in one piece, leading her brother to celebrate in his usual pantomime way before going back to his drink.

There is no shortage of references and Easter Eggs in Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time, as eagle-eyed players have spotted cameo appearances from classic franchise mainstays and even a few guest characters like fellow PlayStation platforming icon Spyro The Dragon throughout Crash 4’s vast wealth of levels. So far, the game has gained heavy praise from fans for mixing the classic gameplay and surprising challenge of the older Crash Bandicoot titles with fun new abilities like phasing through objects and slowing time, serving as a true return to form for the series after the more divisive titles of the early 2000s and the subsequent Crash drought.

As such, Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time’s nod toward Uncharted 4 is a fun shout-out to one of Naughty Dog’s more recent flagship titles, even though Crash himself is now under the care of a different developer altogether. Not to mention bringing things full circle, as Crash’s recent renaissance might not have been so successful had Nathan and Elena not settled down for that quick round of the original Crash Bandicoot four years ago.
