After 20 years, an unreleased Dune game for Game Boy Advance, now known as Elland: The Crystal Wars, could receive a revival if publisher The Retro Room Games launches a successful crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter. The Dune video game in question originally bore the title of Frank Herbert’s Dune: Ornithopter Assault. Production on the flying/shooter began in 2001, with developer Soft Brigade at the helm and Cryo Interactive serving as publisher.

According to Unseen64, Soft Brigade had nearly finished the project when Cryo Interactive fell on financial hardships during the summer of 2002. The studio shelved its Dune-branded GBA experience as a result; Cryo’s full collapse in October of that same year meant the project would indefinitely remain in stasis. Fortunately, preservation efforts have kept Ornithopter Assault alive in some respect, courtesy of a leaked rom that allows the title to be played on Game Boy Advance emulators. But if all goes as planned, even more people could have access to the canceled Dune game in the not so distant future.

Publisher The Retro Room Games managed to secure the rights to Ornithopter Assault; it didn’t acquire the Dune IP rights, however. Thus, the unreleased Dune title will eventually resurface as Elland: The Crystal Wars, with all official traces of the famous sci-fi brand scrubbed away. The Retro Room Games plans to launch a Kickstarter campaign for the project next week on November 16. In the event that it receives sufficient funding, this once lost experience will return to the foreground yet again for Nintendo GBA owners. Though The Retro Room Games will strip The Crystal Wars of its Dune-related ties, the core Ornithopter Assault sound as though it will largely remain intact. The first-person flying/shooter game takes place in a desert on the outskirts of the galaxy, where players assume the role of an elite pilot responsible for destroying enemy vessels and buildings, escorting allies, and collecting resources across no less than 23 different missions. In addition, the planet of Elland will play host to myriad weapons and power-ups scattered throughout the desert, all available for users to find during their GBA adventures.

Dune’s recent resurgence because of the Denis Villeneuve-directed film could see The Crystal Wars Kickstarter quickly reach its funding goal. If so, the game publisher intends to open stretch goals for localization and merchandise. A fully funded campaign will allow the company to release a physical edition complete with a Game Boy Advance cartridge, manual, and collector’s box.
