The Internet has increasingly become a place of unexpected crossovers. In the great tradition of odd mash-ups, a Valheim player has managed to implement a Game Boy emulator into the game that actually runs Pokemon Yellow. Now, instead of players worrying about what they might encounter walking through the wilderness in Valheim, they can once again fret about what they might find trekking through the grass in the Kanto region of Pokemon.

Redditor Mixone-Computing’s mod allows players to drop a television smack in the middle of their base. As other players battled one another for architectural superiority, Mixone was quietly working on bringing the modern world to Viking shores. Make no mistake about it, this is not a screen that simply displays the game, this version of Pokemon Yellow is fully playable.

In a brief clip loaded to Reddit, Mixone shows off the capabilities of the Pokemon Yellow TV in Valheim. They briefly interact with the game, name themselves and their rival—unfortunately electing for a standard, respectful name—and then wander around the player’s house for a few moments. In the comments, the Redditor allays any suspicion from skeptical fans, however, and confirms that the nostalgic classic Pokemon Yellow is totally playable.

As Valheim’s popularity continues to trend upwards, players are constantly wondering what new additions they can expect to see in-game. While this functioning Pokemon Yellow may be among the most unexpected, it could be exactly what inveterate players of Valheim need while they wait for new content. In between shifts of improving their base, players can now retire to the local mead hall for a quick game-within-a-game gaming session. Unlike the older iterations of the Game Boy, Mixone’s creation is entirely backlit, so would-be Pokemon masters will not require a nearby torch for night-time fun.

Unfortunately, as of this post, fans will have to make do with other mods, as the Pokemon Yellow emulator is not available yet. The reason behind this is that ROM files—like the Pokemon Yellow that runs on the TV—can’t be shared. It’s more likely that Mixone will release a version of the mod that allows players to place down the TV and play ROM files that they’ve gathered themselves. While this is disappointing news, for now, it’s also relatively enticing, as the possibilities extend well beyond Pokemon Yellow, and players could theoretically import any Game Boy game they so choose.

Valheim is available in Early Access on PC.
