The latest update to an unofficial Valheim VR mod will now allow players to punch wolves with their bare bands. The VHVR mod for Valheim was created by modder manicmoose99 and released last April 2021, giving players of the hit sandbox survival game the opportunity to play it in VR. The mod does have its fair share of issues, which is primarily due to the game not being made to support VR, but it is regularly updated to improve the experience.

The unofficial VR mod is just one of many mods that have been created for Valheim to further enhance or expand the game’s experience. Another recently released mod that adds a significant change to the game is the shipbuilding mod that allows players to customize their ships to their liking, a feature that isn’t available in the base game. The mod lets players go beyond Valheim’s three basic ship models and practically create one to their liking.

The VHVR mod just received its latest major update that adds support for VR motion controls, allowing melee combat via swinging when wielding weapons or punching when unarmed. There’s also upper body and finger tracking, a full spear as well as bow and arrow motion controls, fishing, point and click building, and more. The VR motion tracking also works in multiplayer so players can wave or perform other gestures and other players will be able to see them, although this is currently limited to only when playing with other VR players. Those not using the mod will instead see visual issues such as characters having no upper body animations.

According to manicmoose99, motion control support was implemented with the help of fellow modder Maddy25, who worked on a lot of the components of the feature. Currently, full-motion controls have been added for both the Oculus Touch and Index controllers while Vive controls have limited support due to having fewer inputs and neither developer having any to test and validate with. The duo also still plans to tune the features based on feedback and plan to implement room-scale support to expand the mod’s motion tracking capabilities.

While the VHVR mod does take a bit of effort to set up, the addition of motion control support may make all the steps to get it up and running worth it. With two people working on the mod’s motion control support, it’ll hopefully get updates at a much faster rate, whether it be added features or upgrades to already existing ones. Regardless, VR and motion controls are definitely good additions to an already great game like Valheim.
